  1. Technical note: Preliminary results with a tannin extract on the performance and mortality of growing rabbits in an enteropathy infected environment.

    Maertens, L.; Struklec, M.
In 3 preliminary trials, the effect of a dietary addition with 0.5% of a chestnut tannin extract, containing approximately 55% hydrolysable tannins, was examined on mortality after weaning. The tannin-enriched diet was fed to the does and their litters from 22 days of lactation. After weaning (day 29), young rabbits did not change dietary treatment and remained on the control diet or the tannin-enriched diet, respectively. In total 1217 rabbits were considered, about half of whom were fed the tannin-enriched diet. Mortality reached 17.1% and 7.7% (trial 1, P=0.054), 17.2 and 18.2% (trail 2, NS) and 29.0% and 9.9% (trial...

  2. Inheritance of the naked gene and associations with postweaning performance and thermotolerance characters in fryer rabbits from an F2 generation.

    Jackson, R.; Rogers, A.D.; Lukefahr, S.D.
[EN] In 1999, a breeding experiment was initiated with matings of a rare, genetically naked, Mini-Lop buck to New Zealand White does to test the hypothesis that the naked trait was due to a single, autosomal recessive gene. The F1 generation all had normal fur coats. Parental F1 X F1 inter se matings were made, which yielded 260 F2 progeny, 206 furred and 54 naked (79.2 and 20.8%, respectively), supporting the single recessive gene hypothesis (c2=2.26; df=1; P>0.05). Although the F2 generation was possibly the subject of linkage disequilibrium, another objective was to quantify potential favourable effects of the naked...

  3. Impact of inmediate postnatal sucking on mortality and growth of sucklings in field condition.

    Farougou S., Kpodekon M., Koutinhouin B., Brahi O.D.H., Djago Y., Lebas F., Coudert P.
Viability and growth of 191 kits born alive from 33 does from a local population was studied in tropical conditions (Benin) in relation to achieving the initial sucking. After observing the state of the kit's belly at the first control, each kit was weighed and classified as suckled (S) or non suckled (NS), and returned to it's mother's nest box. On average 34% of kits were considered to be in the NS group. The proportion ranged from 15% in very small litters (2-3 born alive) to 42% in the largest litters observed (8-9 born alive). Apparent live weight of NS...

  5. Effect of genotype, age at slaughter and sex on chemical composition and sensory profile of rabbit meat

    Gasperlin, L.; Polak, T.; Rajar, A.; Skvarèa, M.; Zlender, B.
[EN] A study was conducted to evaluate the chemical composition (moisture, protein, ash, fat, cholesterol, fatty acid composition)and sensory profile of meat from rabbits of both sexes belonging to two genotypes (Slovenian male line - SIKA and commercial hybrid breed imported from Italy - Hybrid) and slaughtered at different ages (77 and 90 days). Rabbits were fed a commercial diet ad libitum. The Longissimus lumborum muscles, abdominal wall and hind leg were sampled from thirty-two animals. On average, homogenized rabbit meat contains 72.7% moisture, 22.1% proteins, 1.31% ash, 4.1% fat, 76.6 mg cholesterol/100 g of fresh meat. Fatty acids are...

  6. An investigation into haematological and serum chemistry parameters of rabbits in Trinidad.

    Burnett N.; Mathura K.; Metivier K.S.; Holder R.B.; Brown G.; Campbell M.
Blood samples were collected from a total of 70 rabbits at three locations in Trinidad. The locations were the University Field Station (n=46), the School of Veterinary Medicine (n=11), and the Eastern Caribbean Institute of Agriculture and Forestry (n=13). Complete blood counts and serum chemistry determinations were done for each sample. Values obtained were compared to reference ranges in the literature. The effects of gender, maturity (juveniles vs. adults), breed (New Zealand White vs. Mixed), and rabbitry on all parameters were examined. Mixed rabbits were crossbreds consisting of at least two breeds: New Zealand White, Californian, Checkered Giant. A comparison...
