  1. Outsourcing with debt financing

    Teixeira, João C.A.
This paper investigates the effect of capital structure on a firm’s choice between vertical integration and outsourcing. We model the production decision in a Principal-Agent framework and show that suppliers use debt as a strategic instrument to collect the surplus from outsourcing as their wealth constraint or limited liability ensures them more attractive compensation schemes. Investigating the buyer’s capital structure, we find that outsourcing with risky debt is more likely to occur for high values of the outsourcing surplus.

  2. Relocation and investment in R&D by firms

Bárcena-Ruiz, Juan Carlos; Begoña Garzón, María
The literature on foreign direct investment has analyzed corporate location decisions when firms invest in R&D to reduce production costs. Such firms may set up new plants in other developed countries while maintaining their domestic plants. In contrast, we here consider firms that close down their domestic operations and relocate to countries where wage costs are lower. Thus, we assume that firms may reduce their production costs by investing in R&D and likewise by moving their plants abroad. We show that these two mechanisms are complementary. When a firm relocates it invests more in R&D than when it does not...

  3. An OLG model of growth with longevity : when grandparents take care of grandchildren

    Fanti, Luciano; Gori, Luca
By assuming that grandparents take care of grandchildren, this paper aims at studying the effects of longevity on long-term economic growth in a model with overlapping generations and endogenous fertility. We show that an increase in longevity may: (i) reduce the long-term economic growth; (ii) increase the supply of labour, and (iii) cause fertility either to increase of decrease depending on the size of time spent by grandparents to rise grandchildren. These findings also hold in an endogenous growth setting a` la Romer (J Polit Econ 94:1002–1037, 1986).

  4. The Economic Adjustment Program for Portugal : assessing welfare impact in a heterogeneous-agent framework

    Viegas, Miguel; Ribeiro, Ana Paula
The sovereign debt crisis, triggered by the 2007-08 global financial cri- sis, has affected several European Union (EU) countries, leading to unprecedented financial assistance programs. In May 2011, the Portuguese Government set an agreement with the Troika (a supranational institution composed by the European Commission (EC), the European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF)), through which, in exchange for external help, the Portuguese author- ities committed to an Economic Adjustment Program (EAP). In order to assess the impacts of the EAP on welfare and, in particular, on inequality, this paper simulates the debt consolidation strategy proposed by...
