Scalable Resource Reservation for the Internet - Le Boudec, Jean-Yves; Ferrari, T.; Almesberger, W.
A protocol for resource reservation in the Internet which is truly scalable: routers keep only aggregate information, no per flow state.

IP and ATM - a position paper - Le Boudec, Jean-Yves; Flinck, H.; Beeler, R.; Schmid, R.; Giordano, Silvia
This paper gives a technical overview of different networking technologies, such as Internet, ATM. It describes different approaches of how to run IP on top of an ATM network, and assesses their potential to be used as an integrated services network.

On the potential of forward error correction mechanisms applied to real-time services carried over B-ISDN - Stock, Thomas; Garcia, X.
Variable Bit Rate real-time multimedia services like highly compressed video or audio tend to be very sensitive to transmission errors. This paper investigates cell and frame loss as well as delay and timing issues in an ATM-based B-ISDN environment that carries such services. The figures derived through simulation using artificial as well as real world sources motivate the introduction of forward error correction (FEC) mechanisms. We describe an approach that combines FEC mechanisms with extended loss recovery properties and cell interleaving and that is capable of dealing with variable bit rate services. If parameters and components are properly chosen the...

Study of AAL5 and a New AAL Segmentation Mechanism for MPEG-2 Video over ATM - Hubaux, Jean-Pierre; Basso, Andrea; Garcia, X.
This paper investigates the performance of AAL5 under cell loss conditions for real-time MPEG-2 based video applications. The figures derived through simulations show poor performance due to AAL5 limited error correction methods. The results motivate the introduction of new AAL mechanisms suited for CBR multimedia applications that integrates per-cell sequence numbering without adding any extra overhead. This mechansim increases the error detection granularity. The results show an improvement on the cell loss figures ontained for AAL5 of about one order of magnitude under the same traffic conditions.

Teleteaching over Broadband Networks: The BETEUS project - Dufresne, Bruno; Znaty, Simon; Logean, Xavier
In this paper, we present the design and implementation of the Beteus (Broadband Exchange for Trans-European Usage) communication platform. BETEUS is an european project aiming at developing a generic, stable, flexible and scalable communication platform which provides support for interactive work between distributed end-users. In terms of interactive work, BETEUS concentrates on distributed classrooms, tele-seminars, multimedia document archival and retrieval and tele-tutoring. The problems raised during the realization of the BETEUS communication platform are outlined and the proposed solutions explained. The follow-up of BETEUS in Switzerland through the TELEPOLY project which concerns operational teleteaching between the two Swiss federal institutes...

Improving Confidence in Service Implementation in an Intelligent Network - Logean, Xavier
The approach to improve confidence in Services Implementation presented in this paper is based on the addition of a Service Modeler and Verifier Function (SMV) in the environment where the service take place. The SMV, combined with a test scenario, is able to detect on-the-fly implementations errors. The SMV keeps an abstract model of the service and the environment in which the service is executed and verifies at each model change properties derived from the requirements. In order to update its model the SMV spies all messages between the different entities of the network. The properties are expresses in linear...

VPN on DCE: From Reference Configuration to Implementation - Gbaguidi, Constant; Meinkoehn, Jens; Jean-Paul, Gaspoz
This paper presents the results of the implementation of a Virtual Private Network telecommunications service prototype and associated management services on a distributed platform. The specification thereof has been carried out according to the RACE II project R2041 PRISM Service Management Reference Configuration. The implementation of the prototype and its management has been achieved on an OSF DCE (Distributed Computing Environment) platform.

Towards an Integrated Resource Management Framework: A Challenge for the Future Multimedia Services - Gbaguidi, Constant
Being able to manage the entire chain of resources involved in a communication session is a need for the purposes of future multimedia services, because many of the bottlenecks in communications will move from the network side to the end-systems or third-party equipments. Indeed the quality delivered by multimedia applications depends highly upon the capabilities of the end-systems. The advantages of managing all the resources involved in communication sessions are twofold. First, a correct and more precise diagnosis about QoS bottlenecks (resources not fulfilling their part of QoS) is then possible. Second, the way the service stakeholders are granting their...

IPv6 & IPv4 potential for VLANs - Le Boudec, Jean-Yves; Einsiedler, Hans; Kurz, Thorsten
The benefits that Virtual LANs offer can be realized by using features of an IPv6 network along with small enhancements the IPv6 and DHCPv6 protocol stacks.
