Source model extraction---the automated extraction of information from system artifacts---is a common phase in reverse engineering tools. One of the major challenges of this phase is creating extractors that can deal with irregularities in the artifacts that are typical for the reverse engineering domain (for example, syntactic errors, incomplete source code, language dialects and embedded languages).

A domain-specific language (DSL) provides a notation tailored towards an application domain and is based on the relevant concepts and features of that domain. As such, a DSL is a means to describe and generate members of a family of programs in the domain.

Quality of Service (QoS) protocols and architectures play an important role in distributed multimedia systems since multimedia presentations need to be played for the user without stalls, necessitating guaranteed response times. However in the Internet no other QoS than best--e#ort is given. This report investigates some QoS architectures and protocols designed to overcome these limitations and looks at the applications of these protocols for multimedia systems.

Many dependencies appear between the di#erent stages of the creation of a hypermedia presentation. These dependencies have to be taken into account while designing a system for their automatic generation. In this work we study two of them and propose some techniques to treat them. During this process, we introduce the partial design of a hypermedia formatting model that we call Hypermedia Formatting Objects.

Of the various programming paradigms in use today, object-orientation is probably the most successful in terms of industrial take-up and application, particularly in the field of multimedia. It is therefore unsurprising that this technology has been adopted by ISO/IEC JTC1/SC24 as the foundation for a forthcoming International Standard for Multimedia, called PREMO. Two important design aims of PREMO are that it be distributable, and that it provide a set of media-related services that can be extended in a disciplined way to support the needs of future applications and problem domains. While key aspects of the object-oriented paradigm provide a sound technical basis for achieving these aims,...

Learning one class at a time can be seen as an eective solution to classi cation problems in which only the positive examples are easily identi able. A kernel method to accomplish this goal consists of a representation stage - which computes the smallest sphere in feature space enclosing the positive examples - and a classi cation stage - which uses the obtained sphere as a decision surface to determine the positivity of new examples. In this paper we describe a kernel well suited to represent, identify, and recognize 3D objects from unconstrained images.

With the rapid growth of interest in the Internet as a means for accessing multimedia presentations for education, entertainment and commerce, comes a corresponding need for systems to supply automatically generated, personalised presentations. Multimedia is a rich and complex genre of resources and the interrelated effects of content, style and structure ensure that automatic presentation generation is in itself a complicated and challenging task.

The Semantic Web envisions a Web that is both human readable and machine processible. In practice, however, there is still a large conceptual gap between annotated content repositories on the one hand, and coherent, human readable Web pages on the other. To bridge this conceptual gap, one needs to select the appropriate content from the repository, structure and order the material, and design a Web page that effectively conveys the selected content and the chosen structure. In addition to this conceptual gap, there is also a technological gap. On one side of this gap, we find the semantic-oriented technology deployed to build annotated content repositories. This includes...

The paper presents a variant of our generative probabilistic multimedia retrieval model that is suitable for information needs expressed as multiple examples. Results have been evaluated on the TRECVID 2003 collection.

The "Document Web" has established itself through the creation of an impressive family of XML and related languages. In addition to this, the "Semantic Web" is developing its own family of languages based primarily on RDF. Although these families were both developed specifically for "the Web", each language family has been developed from different premises with specific goals in mind. The result is that combining both families in a single application is surprisingly difficult. This is unfortunate, since the combination of semantic processing with document processing provides advantages in both directions --- namely using semantic inferencing for more intelligent document processing and using document processing tools for...

The extended backward differentiation formulas (EBDFs) and their modified form (MEBDF) were proposed by Cash in the 1980s for solving initial-value problems (IVPs) for stiff systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). In a recent performance evaluation of various IVP solvers, including a variable-step-variable-order implementation of the MEBDF method by Cash, it turned out that the MEBDF code often performs more efficiently than codes like RADAU5, DASSL and VODE. This motivated us to look at possible parallel implementations of the MEBDF method. Each MEBDF step essentially consists of successively solving three nonlinear systems by means of modified Newton iteration using the same Jacobian matrix. In a direct...
