The atmospheric image motion control loop for the 3.6m Telescopio
Nazionale Galileo (TNG) has been tested and characterized in lab using
a turbulence generator. The tip-tilt sensor is based on four Avalanche
Photodiodes and the tilt corrector is a voice coil actuated flat mirror.
The feedback network is implemented using a a DSP-based system. We
have used the same focal ratios of the beam as it will be experienced
by the system at the foci of the TNG telescope. The collected data
are time--series useful to perform a Fourier analysis aimed to estimate
the effectiveness of the correction. These data can be compared with:
theoretical and measured tilt spectra...

The recovery of absolute tip--tilt information from a LGS--based
Adaptive Optics system is (together with conical anisoplanatism) one
of the open problems that the LGS community is faced on. Here a
number of approaches are discussed in some detail. While there is no
evidence that some specific technique is clearly better than the others
it is pointed out that a lot of investigation is still required to assess the
performances and to eventually point out some new uncovered schemes.
1 The framework
A number of optical ground--based telescopes with aperture larger than 6m is
going to have its first--light in this turn of century. At the same time Adaptive
Optics...

Dome seeing may strongly deteriorate the final sharpness of a point
source astronomical image, reducing its Image Quality. Both the telescope
enclosure and the mirrors may contribute to the dome seeing, if
air convection is induced by differences of temperature between them
and external air. The prediction of the external air temperature with
respect to a given time interval allows one to preset in advance the air
conditioning temperature value in the telescope enclosure. With the
aim to study the neural networks capabilities and limits to make short
term temperature prediction, a few case studies have been carried out
by using an autoregressive neural network model. The actual goal...

In the following pages the TNG Tip-Tilt Servo-Loop subsystem is
described in general terms from a functional point of view. The loop
is based on a completely digital design which is both the natural result
of the use of photon counting devices as image motion sensors and the
key aspect for the realization of a system which is at the same time
extremely flexible and easy to use.
The hardware layout is shown with some details on single components
at the board level. An overall description of the architecture of
software components is also included.
1 Introduction
The Tip-Tilt system is the first step (the first-order step, indeed) in the...

A Zernike decomposition of the pupil phase variance due to focus
anisoplanatism for sodium laser guide star has been calculated, including
the angular error variance associated with overall tilt. This last
quantity, or tilt focus anisoplanatism oe

FA;tt
, is necessary in evaluating
the usefulness of new techniques developed to measure the wave-front
tilt from sodium laser guide star. The analytical expression of oe

FA;tt
in
the case of refractive index fluctuation with a Kolmogorov power spectral
density is given together with numerical results for two different

may be a limitation when using a sodium laser guide star to
sense the overall wave-front tilt...

We measured the velocity curve and the velocity dispersion profile of
the ionized gas along the major axis of the edge-on galaxy UGC 10205.
The observed kinematics extends up to about 40
00
from the nucleus.
In the inner Sigma13
00
of this early-type spiral three kinematically distinct
gaseous components are present. We disentangle a fast-rotating and a
slow-rotating component. They give to the UGC 10205 velocity curve
a "figure-of-eight" appearance. A third velocity component is also detected
on the southeast side of the galaxy. Possibly it is produced by
gas in non-circular motions.

Within the last year ionized gas kinematics has revealed in a number of edgeon
disk galaxies double-peaked emission lines....

The purpose of this document is to define a number of terms which
are specific to data reduction and calibration of scientific data acquired
by TNG instruments.
1 Introduction
1.1 Scope
The development of an instrument for the TNG [5] requires the existence of
different types of software packages, ranging from the control of the instrument
itself down to the reduction of the data (to remove the instrument signature
and to transform the raw data into physical units). While it has been clearly
defined that the control software needs to be integrated inside a well-specified
global environment [3] through the development of an ancillary process, no
decision has yet been made...

We present here a progress report on the results obtained with the infrared grisms
for the imaging camera NICS for the GALILEO National Telescope. We have studied
and designed four grisms to cover the J, H and K bands at low (R ¸ 500) and
intermediate (R ¸ 1000) resolution. All the grisms have been fabricated by Richardson
Grating Laboratories (RGL, ex Milton Roy Company) and provided along with
their efficiency curve. We have performed further laboratory tests to confirm the
RGL curves and to measure how the grism efficiency depends on its inclination with
respect to the input optical axis. The results have shown that the...

By imaging the edge of the Moon we have tested a seeing monitor
able to evaluate the isokinetic patch size. These measurements have a
relevant interest because of several Laser Guide Star (LGS) tilt recovery
schemes that have been proposed. In our approach the edge of the
Moon mimics a LGS as seen far from the laser projector. The conceptual
design of the instrument, the data reduction techniques and the
preliminary results obtained at the Asiago Astronomical Observatory
are given. Because, as a by product, the instrument is able to evaluate

Due to the finite height of the mesospheric sodium laser guide star,
it is shown that the measurement of absolute tilt done with the multi--
colour laser star technique is affected by an uncertainty depending upon
the C
2
n distribution. Two case studies for D = 3:58 and D = 8:00 meter
telescopes are given.
1 Introduction
In the next years a number of telescopes with aperture diameter much larger
than the existing HST will see their first--light (Mountain, Kurz & Oschmann,
1994). In this framework the Adaptive Optics (AO) technique (Beckers, 1993)
can provide a substantial improvement in the resolution of optical imaging in
the next decades, provided that a...
