35. Bagg on magnetism, or the doctrine of equilibrium: being an attempt to prove that not only the health of vegetables and animals, but all systems and principles in nature, depend upon an equilibrium of action between two extremes, and that the impulse or force by which they are produced, as well as destroyed, is owing to the magnetic fluids which operate both at the same time, on the same object or principle ... - Bagg, Joseph H.

36. COMPUTATIONAL STUDIES OF GADOLINIUM IN NITRIDES : BULK GDN AND GD-DOPED GAN - Mitra, Chandrima
The thesis presented here deals electronic and magnetic properties of Gd doped GaN and Gadolinium pnictides. GdN is a ferromagnetic semiconductor while the other Gd-pnicitides GdX with X=P,As,Sb,Bi are all antiferromagnetic and semimetallic. Gd-doped GaN is ferromagnetic above room temperatures even in very dilute concentrations of Gd and has been claimed to have colossal magnetic moments. The main question we address in this thesis is: what are the origins of magnetism in terms of the electronic structure of the materials? We begin our study with bulk GdN. Our main contribution on the electronic structure, is a study of the optical interband transitions, which...

37. Investigations Of Spin-Dynamics And Steady-States Under Coherent And Relaxation Processes In Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy - Karthik, G
The existence of bulk magnetism in matter can be attributed to the magnetic properties of the sub-atomic particles that constitute the former. The fact that the origin of these microscopic magnetic moments cannot be related to the existence of microscopic currents became apparent when this assumption predicted completely featureless bulk magnetic properties in contradiction to the observation of various bulk magnetic properties [1]. This microscopic magnetic moment, independent of other motions, hints at the existence of a hitherto unknown degree of freedom that a particle can possess. This property has come to be known as the "spin" of the particle....
