141. Radial stress paths in triaxial tests on compacted Boom clay: stiffness and anisotropy - Della Vecchia, G.; Jommi, Cristina; Romero Morales, Enrique Edgar
Experimental results of triaxial tests performed on unsaturated soil samples of statically compacted Boom clay are presented. Boom clay samples we re subjected to radial stress paths at two different constant water contents: w= 15%, the as-compacted one, and w= 18%, achieved by vapour transfer technique from the as-compacted condition. The dependence of volumetric compliance on the stress ratio and on the water content is evidenced. The results of the experimental investigation are interpreted in terms of anisotropy of the mechanical response, as a consequence of the induced anisotropy during static compaction, and in terms of the dependence of the compressibility...

143. Microstructural aspects of compacted clayey soils:an experimental viewpoint - Romero Morales, Enrique Edgar
An overview is initially presented to bring into light the important microstructural effects on different compacted clayey soil properties. Experimental data coming from microstructural studies on different compacted clayey soils with dominant bimodal pore size distribution (i.e., aggregated type or with shielding skeleton) are analysed to provide a comprehensive picture of different phenomenological (macroscopic) features of soil behaviour. A microstructural model, already developed to take into account microstructural aspects on water retention curves, was used to explain hydraulic properties and their evolution along hydro- mechanical paths. The key point of the model is the introduction of the dependence of the microvoid volume (with saturated...

144. Modelling compacted soils - Pinyol Puigmartí, Núria Mercè; Alonso Pérez de Agreda, Eduardo
Mechanical and hydraulic compacted soil properties for a given soil mineralogy are essentially controlled by the attained dry density, water content and microstructure. Basic compaction conditions (wet or dry of optimum, higher or lower energy of compaction) result in changes in microstructure. The paper attempts to provide a procedure of increasing accuracy to translate compaction concepts, rooted in common practice, into a modelling framework capable of explaining the behaviour of compacted soils. The approach developed is divided into the following stages: a) The classical compaction variables are interpreted in terms of two stress-like variables. They are regarded as the initial state for...

148. Rapid drawdown and landslides - Pinyol Puigmartí, Núria Mercè; Alonso Pérez de Agreda, Eduardo; Olivella Pastallé, Sebastià
Predicting the pore pressure distribution in a slope after rapid drawdown conditions requires the solution of a coupled flow‐deformation analysis in a saturated‐unsaturated porous media. A fully coupled finite element code (Code_Bright), able to handle in a consistent manner the drawdown conditions, is used to simulate the pore water pressure measured in the upstream slope of an earth dam (Glen Shira Dam, Scotland) subjected to a controlled rapiddrawdown event. A comparison of some calculation alternatives is then given and compared with field pressure records. The paper describes also the analysis performed to interpret a recent case of a major landslide...

154. Analysis of the dynamic response of pump-turbine runners. Part I: Experiment - Presas Batlló, Alexandre; Valero Ferrando, M.del Carmen; Huang, Xingxing; Egusquiza Estévez, Eduard; Farhat, Mohamed; Avellan, François
When in operation, pump-turbine runners have to withstand large pressure pulsations generated by the rotor-stator interaction. The analysis of the dynamic behavior of these structures is necessary to avoid damage. For this analysis a realistic model of the runner is necessary. When the runner is submerged in water and inside the casing, its dynamic response is greatly affected. The added mass effects of the surrounding fluid and the proximity of the head-cover and bottom-cover may reduce the natural frequencies. The frequency reduction produced by the added mass effects and the influence of the boundary conditions has to be known for...

158. Mobility and interaction of heavy metals in a natural soil - Bianchi Janetti, Emanuela; Dror,Ishai; Riva, Monica; Guadagnini, Alberto; Sánchez Vila, Francisco Javier; Berkowitz, Brian
We study the mobility and interaction under competing conditions observed for copper (Cu2+) and zinc (Zn2+) ions in the context of laboratory-scale experiments performed in natural soil columns. The experiments focus on the analysis of solute breakthrough curves (BTCs) obtained after injection of an aqueous solution containing similar concentrations of the two metal ions into a soil column fully saturated with double deionized water. Transport of the competing ions is tested for the same soil under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Measurements show that the species with lower affinity for the soil, Zn2+, migrates occupying all available adsorption sites, and is then...
