Many eligible patients never receive anorgan transplant because of biologi-cal or psychological human factors that contribute to shortfalls in organ availabil-ity.1,2 Immune suppression and surgical compli-cations, for example, require that transplant recipients receive centralized care at hospitals staffed by highly specialized clinicians.3,4 How-ever, the subtleties of patient preferences, com-munity support and maximizing available or-gans require that donors be identified from a wide range of general hospitals.2 Ultimately, these practices can mean that hospitals respon-sible for identifying potential donors do not always encounter the patients who received the suc cessful transplantations. A request for organ donation after death requires initiative, appropriate...

Human beings are biologi-cally adapted for culture in ways that other primates are not. The difference can be clearly seen when the social learning skills of humans and their nearest primate relatives are systematically compared. The human adaptation for cul-ture begins to make itself manifest in human ontogeny at around 1 year of age as human infants come to understand other persons as intentional

“Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life – think of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.”

  6. Biotechnology and Commodification within Health Care

    Mark J. Hanson
The biotechnology industry’s intellectual property claims contribute to a subtle but not insignificant encroachment of commodification within health care. Drawing on the con-ceptual framework of Margaret Jane Radin, I argue that patent claims on human biologi-cal materials may commodify that with which our personhood and individuality is inter-twined but that such commodification is broad and incomplete. Patents on nonhuman biological organisms contribute to a more materialistic understanding of them but do not significantly change our relationship to them. The systemic effects of biotechnology’s commodification within health care are various and may compromise the goal of good health. The morally problematic...

    Graham Sewell
This article examines the ideological and philosophical antecedents of current popular management approaches that advocate empowerment through teamwork. These approaches frequently assume that a predisposition toward teamwork is an uncontested historical fact. The author argues that this invokes largely an invented tradition of team-work, one based on romanticized and mythical depictions of preindustrial work. This invention serves useful ideological and practical purposes for advocates of teamwork, as it depicts extensive organizational change as a return to a more natural form of organiza-tion. Accepting, without question, the myth that we have always worked in teams can even give rise to the...

implies that they were locally buffered against larger-scale climate forcing, or that the available evidence is not sufficient to resolve small- versus large-scale environmental processes. The hominin fossil and cultural record could be reconsidered in light of such paleoclimatic meta–data sets. The strength of this approach depends on the number of sample points (that is, different basins and regions), accurate interpretations of climatic prox-ies, well-resolved correlations between basins, and a healthy dose of devil’s advocacy before mak-ing a leap to global-scale interpretations. It is also worth remembering that climate was only one of many factors affecting human evolution; biologi-cal processes...
