122. Pacific seasonal workers for Australian horticulture : a neat fit? - Mares, Peter; Maclellan, Nic
Seasonal labor shortages hinder the expansion of Australia’s multi-billion dollar horticultural industry because primary producers find it difficult to secure sufficient workers at peak times such as harvests. In the labor surplus economies of Pacific Island nations un(der)employment and a lack of income inhibit social and economic development, restrict educational opportunities and contribute to social unrest. This article investigates the potential to address both these issues through the development of temporary labor programs to allow Pacific Islanders to fill seasonal gaps in Australian horticulture. The authors outline key policy considerations for the design and regulation of seasonal work schemes in...

123. The Effects of Energy Price Increases on Dutch Horticulture - Bunte, Frank; van Galen, Michiel
This paper elaborates on the effects of a rise in energy costs for Dutch glasshouse horticultural producers. The effects on production, bilateral trade and consumption in 25 European countries plus Morocco, Turkey and the Rest of the World, are estimated using a version of the HORTUS partial equilibrium supply and demand model. This model includes 11 sorts of fruit and vegetables, and two categories of ornamental plants and flowers. As energy, especially natural gas, is a major intermediate input in Dutch glasshouse horticulture, it has potentially large impacts on producers and trade. The results indicate that a 10 percent increase...

ABSTRACT This work presents...

128. Horticulture exports, agro-industrialization, and farm-nonfarm linkages with the smallholder farm sector: evidence from Senegal - Miet Maertens
In this article we address the question of farm-nonfarm linkages at the household level in Senegal. We examine whether increasing off-farm employment opportunities for rural households-resulting from increased horticulture exports and associated agro-industrialization-has benefitted the smallholder farm sector through investment linkages. We use data from a household survey in the main horticulture export region in Senegal. We find that access to unskilled employment in the export agro-industry has contributed to the alleviation of farmers' liquidity constraints, resulting in increased smallholder agricultural production. 129. Horticulture Exports, Agro-industrialization and Farm-nonfarm Linkages with the Smallholder Farm Sector: Evidence from Senegal - Miet Maertens
In this paper we address the question of farm-nonfarm linkages at the household level for a case-study in Senegal. We examine whether increasing off-farm employment opportunities for rural households ?resulting from increased horticulture exports and associated agro-industrialization ?has benefitted the smallholder farm sector through investment linkages. We use data from a household survey in the main horticulture export region in Senegal. We find that access to unskilled employment in the export agro-industry has contributed to alleviation farmers?liquidity constraints, resulting in increased smallholder agricultural production.

131. Testing Porter's Hypothesis: A Stochastic Frontier Panel Data Analysis of Dutch Horticulture - van der Vlist, Arno; Withagen, Cees; Folmer, Henk
We propose a test of the Porter hypothesis for the Dutch horticulture sector, using a stochastic production frontier analysis allowing for an inclusion of policy variables to account for the effect of environmental policy of firm performance. We find considerable heterogeneity in the way firms react to environmental policy measures. Our estimation results indicate, for example, that a 1997 voluntary agreement covering energy, nutrient and pesticides use enhances technical efficiency of vegetable and plants growers, contrary to specialised flower growers. Specialised flower growers, however, did react to the 1993 multi-year agreement on energy reduction, contrary to vegetable and plant growers....

132. Productivity growth and inter-sector spill-over in Dutch horticulture, 1976-1995 - Alfons Oude Lansink; Igor Bezlepkin
This article calculates nonparametric measures of total factor productivity growth on Dutch horticultural firms in the period 1976-1995. Individual components of total factor productivity growth, i.e., efficiency change and technical change are regressed on socioeconomic factors reflecting the effects of the world oil crises, household and demographic characteristics, location, and investment in physical capital. Also, the article investigates the presence of inter-sector spill-overs between groups of firms with different specializations in Dutch horticulture. 133. Comparative analysis of the EFuNN and the Support Vector Machinemodels for the classification of horticulture data - Brendon J. Woodford
Support Vector Machines (SVM) over the past six years have emerged as one of the more robust classification architectures coupled with good generalisation capabilities. Similarly the Evolving Fuzzy Neural Network (EFuNN) have also been reported to posses these properties as well. This paper compares these two models and then applies them to the classification of two datasets taken from the horticulture industry. The results that are reported indicate that the EFuNN performs comparably well against its statistically based counterpart.

134. Status and Growth Trends in Area, Production and Productivity of Horticulture Crops in Assam - Ira Das; M K Dutta; S Borbora
Diversification of agriculture is considered as an important strategy for agricultural development in India and importance of horticulture crops as a means of diversification and creation of employment opportunities in rural areas is recognized. Besides, it also leads to agro-industries’ development and value addition. In India, horticulture accounts for 8.5% of the gross cropped area and occupies second position in fruits production and first position in vegetables production. Although, the state of Assam has the potential for development of horticulture with its wide range of topographical and agro-climatic variations, the state is yet to harness the potentiality. In a flood...

135. Empirical series of journal h-indices: The JCR category Horticulture as a case study - Liu, Yuxian; Rao, I. K. Ravichandra; ROUSSEAU, Ronald
Two types of series of h-indices for journals published in the field of Horticulture during the period 1998-2007 are calculated. Type I h-indices are based on yearly data, while type II h-indices use cumulative data. These h-indices are also considered in a form normalised with respect to the number of published articles. It is observed that type I h-indices, normalised or not, decrease linearly over a period of ten years. The type II series, however, is not linear in nature: it exhibits partly a concave shape. This proves that the journals (in Horticulture) do not exhibit a linear increase in...

137. An Estimation of Producer Preferences, and the Wage, Hours, and Gross Sales Effects of Migrant Labor in Alabama's Horticulture Industry - Bellenger, Moriah; Fields, Deacue; Tilt, Ken
Using 2002 survey data, this study employs log-linear regression analysis to examine the effects of migrant labor on wages, hours, and gross sales in Alabama's horticulture industry. A binomial probit model is added to measure producer decisions to hire migrant workers. The presence of migrant workers is found to raise average wages within green industry firms, but exhibits no significant effects on hours and sales.
