Evaluation of fly ash as a component of potting substrates
- Menzies, NW; Aitken, RL
A series of laboratory and glasshouse experiments were undertaken to assess the potential for incorporation of fly ash in soilless potting substrates. The physical and chemical properties of a commercially available bark based substrate, the University of California (UC) 1:1 peat:sand mix and a range uf test substrates containing fly ash were characterised. In test mixtures, fly ash was substituted for a portion of either the peat or sand component of the UC mix, at rates of 10, 20, 30 and 50% of the mix volume, Incorporation of fly ash greatly increased the plant available water capacity (10-1500 kPa) of...

The pattern and control of reproductive development in non-astringent persimmon (Diospyros kaki L.): a review
- George, AP; Mowat, AD; Collins, RJ; MorleyBunker, M
Non-astringent persimmon is rapidly expanding as a new fruit crop in warm subtropical regions of the world, Most research and development of this fruit crop has occurred in Japan, where there is a considerable amount of published literature on its performance. Much of this information is not readily accessible to other countries and needs to be interpreted and modified for other climatic regions. This paper reviews reproductive events from floral initiation to the completion of fruit growth. The timing and significance of these events is described in relation to the phenological cycle. Method of improving flowering, reducing fruit drop and...

1-methylcyclopropene treatment effects on intact and fresh-cut apple
- Jiang, YM; Joyce, DC
Maintenance of quality in fresh-cut produce is an important issue for the rapidly expanding minimal processing sector. Treatment of ethylene generating and/or sensitive fresh-cut produce with the ethyle ne-binding inhibitor 1-methylcyclopropene may assist in quality maintenance over time. Intact (control) and sliced 'Golden Delicious' apple fruit at 20degreesC were treated either with I-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) for 6 h at 0.1 to 10 mul 1(-1) or 1 mul 1(-1) for periods of I to 6 h. Fruit was then kept at either 20degreesC or 4degreesC. Exposure of intact or fresh-cut apple fruit to 1-MCP resulted in reduced respiration and ethylene production rates...

Genotype, sulphur nutrition and soil type effects on growth and dry-matter production of spring onion
- Abbey, L; Joyce, DC; Aked, J; Smith, B
Effects of genotype, sulphur nutrition (0.0, 2.9, 5.8 kg S ha(-1)) and soil type (clay, sandy loam) on spring onion growth were investigated in glasshouse experiments. Leaf greenness, number of green leaves, leaf length, bulb diameter, total plant fresh weight, percentage dry matter (%DM) and total soluble solids content (TSS) varied significantly (P<0.05) among eight spring onion genotypes grown on sandy loam. Overall, A. cepa cultivars had more green leaves, taller plants and greater bulb diameter both with (5.8 kg S ha(-1)) and without S application than A. fistulosum cultivars. Deficiency symptoms of chlorosis, retarded growth and tip-burn were observed...

Mango fruit calcium levels and the effect of postharvest calcium infiltration at different maturities
- Joyce, DC; Shorter, AJ; Hockings, PD
Calcium concentrations in 'Kensington' and 'Sensation' mango fruits were measured throughout fruit development on the tree. Flesh calcium concentrations fell from 2.1 to 0.8 mg/g d.w. for 'Kensington' and 1.6 to 0.8 mg/g d.w. for 'Sensation' as the fruits grew into maturity. Cuticle thickness in both cultivars varied only slightly during growth. Increases in cell wall thickness and in cell length and breadth were similar for both cultivars. Cell wall thickness was greatest in the outer flesh, while cell size increased most in the inner flesh of the fruit. Calcium concentration profiles were determined in 'Kensington' fruit harvested at normal...

1-MCP improves storability of 'Queen Cox' and 'Bramley' apple fruit
- Dauny, PT; Joyce, DC
Better maintenance of firmness and suppression of ethylene production in 'Queen Cox' and 'Bramley' apple [Malus xsylvestris (L.) Mill. var. domestica (Borkh.) Mansf.] fruit. was achieved by prestorage applications of 1-MCP. 1-MCP concentration, exposure time and exposure temperature ranges of 0.1 to 10.0 muL.L-1 1-MCP, 6 to 48 h, and 0 to 20 degreesC, respectively, were effective on fruit subsequently stored for 2 ('Cox') and 3 ('Bramley') months in air at 3 to 4 degreesC. However, 1-MCP had little effect on either firmness or ethylene production after 4 ('Cox') or 6 ('Bramley') months storage. Nonetheless, 1-MCP treated 'Bramley' fruit had...
