Legumes in temperate Australia: A survey of naturalisation and impact in natural ecosystems
- Emms, Jason; Virtue, J. G.; Preston, Christopher A.; Bellotti, Bill
Some of the most damaging weeds of natural ecosystems in temperate Australia and similar Mediterranean environments are legumes. A study was undertaken to determine the level of naturalisation and impact of exotic legumes in temperate Australia. This was the first step in attempting to develop a method of evaluating the weed risk of future legume species introductions. A study of nursery catalogues indicated that legumes were widely cultivated throughout temperate Australia in the early part of the 20th century. A number of these species were able to escape from cultivation and have become part of the region’s naturalised flora. Non-climbing...

Can Horticulture be a Success Story for India?
- Surabhi Mittal
In spite of being one of the largest producers of fruits and vegetables in the world, the export competitiveness among the Indian producers remains low. But with new marketing initiatives, the post-harvest losses and wastage due to poor infrastructure facilities such as storage and transportation are reduced to a considerable extent, yet a lot needs to be done in this sector. In an effort to overcome some of the problems associated with this sector, the case study of the successful SAFAL Market is presented in the paper [Wp no. 197].

Investment Spikes in Dutch Greenhouse Horticulture
- Natalia Goncharova; Arie Oskam; Alfons Oude Lansink; Arno van der Vlist; Jos Verstegen
The presence of investment cycles demonstrates the long-run policy of firms investing in particular periods (investment spikes) with lower or zero investment levels in between, which contradicts the smooth pattern predicted by a convex adjustment model. This paper investigates the spells between investment spikes in a discrete-time proportional hazard framework to estimate the probability of observing lumpy investment and factors underlying lumpy and intermittent patterns of investment. Duration models were estimated on two datasets: on an unbalanced panel and on average data of 10 'firm size' groups of Dutch greenhouse firms over the period 1975-1999. Two specifications of the model...

Horticulture Farmers and Domestic Supermarkets in Kenya
- Reardon, Thomas; Odera, Michael; Neven, David
Are the rural poor excluded from the market opportunities created by the rise of supermarkets in developing countries? We analyzed the farm-level impact of supermarket growth in Kenya's produce sub-sector which is dominated by smallholder producers. Two main findings emerged. First, the existence of a threshold capital vector at the entrance of the supermarket channel does hinder the entry of small, rainfed farms. Instead, the main supply response has come from a new group of medium-sized, fast-growing farms managed by well-educated farmers. Second, the heavy reliance on and higher wages paid to hired farm workers on supermarket-channel farms help to...
