67. 10 ALLEVIATING MALNUTRITION THROUGH HORTICULTURE - S. M. Monowar Hossain
Horticulture is an important subsector of agriculture. The potential of horticultural crops has not yet been fully explored or exploited in Bangladesh. More than 90 vegetables and 60 fruits are grown in Bangladesh, with great regional variation in the extent of cultivation. The cultivated area given to fruits and vegetables is 0.52 million hectares, covering 3.7 percent of total cropped area. Vegetable production provides only about one-fifth of the recommended daily intake of 200 g per person. Likewise, present fruit production provides only 34 g toward the daily requirement of 75 g per person.

69. Production and Productivity Effects of Informal Contract Farming in Kenya's Smallholder Horticultural Sub-sector - Obare, GA; Dept of Agricultural Economics & Business Management, Egerton University, P.O. BOX 536 Njoro, Kenya;; Kariuki, IM; Dept of Agricultural Economics & Business Management, Egerton University, P.O. BOX 536 Njoro, Kenya;
This paper uses data from a 2001 household survey of small-scale farming households in Kirinyaga District, Kenya to explore production effects of informal credit contracts in French bean farming where formal markets for surplus production are seemingly shallow and imperfect. Specifically, it examines whether informal arrangements spur productivity and intensity of inputs use. A three stage least square (3SLS) modelling strategy is used to quantify the direct and indirect effects of contracts on French bean output conditional upon infrastructure, institutional and farmer-specific socio-economic factors. The results show that fertilizer, pesticides and High Yielding Variety seeds use, and French bean output...

73. CHANGES OF THE EU POLICIES IN HORTICULTURE - Alvisi, Franco; Bagnara, Gian Luca
The EU policy in horticulture has switched its aim from price support to integration of farmers' income. Regulation 2200/96 established the new European Market Regulation (CMO) in horticulture. On this base the producers' organizations (PO) are no longer a political institution but a real economic organization with the objectives of planning and concentrating the production. At the same time, the UE has promulgated another plan (Decision n.2796 of 10/10/96 applying the objectives of the Reg. 2081/93), which is specific for Italian regions in "Objective 1" namely with low average income. This issue establishes the commercial macro organizations with the target...

74. Ptychosperma macarthurii: discovery, horticulture and taxonomy - Dowe, John Leslie
Ptychosperma macarthurii is one of the world’s most popular ornamental palms, proving adaptable to a broad range of climatic and cultural conditions. Contrary to this apparent adaptability, the species is relatively uncommon in its native habitats in southern New Guinea and northern Australia, and otherwise occupies a narrow ecological niche. There are some noticeable differences between wild growing plants and those now in cultivation under this name, a situation often attributed to hybridization with other Ptychosperma species. This paper presents an account of the species’ discovery in 1875 during William Macleay’s Chevert Expedition to New Guinea, subsequent introduction to horticulture...

Forty years ago the west of Almeria formed a large field surrounded by few and spread houses. Currently this county is one of the most dynamic areas of the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The agricultural actors and the network of companies and institutions created around the first (agricultural commercial enterprises, warehouse and different factories), have contributed to the development of what is called here the glocal political-economic dimension.
