ANALYSIS OF PACKET HEADER EFFECTS IN RATE ALLOCATION FOR PACKET VIDEO Bo Hong, Aria Nosratinia
- Bo Hong,Aria Nosratinia
The packet header is often ignored in bit allocation problem
of forward error correction (FEC) based packet video transmission
schemes. In this paper, we show that the packet
header has significant influence on the system performance.
We balance the effect of the packet header and the efficiency
of FEC codes via a probabilistic formulation. Optimal bit
allocation is achieved in both non-scalable video and scalable
video. Experiments show that the reconstructed video
quality is improved significantly by our algorithm. Finally,
we also study the effect of parameter mismatch on the performance
of our algorithm.

Exchange rate volatility and macroeconomic performance in Hong Kong
- Crosby, Mark
In this paper evidence on whether Hong Kong's currency board arrangement, in place since 1983, has affected the volatility of real macroeconomic variables is presented. Simple evidence on the relative volatilities of relevant macroeconomic variables pre and post 1983 is presented, before a more formal econometric framework is utilised to examine the linkages between the exchange rate and the real economy. It is found that the currency board period has been one of relative stability in Hong Kong, though it has also been a period where external factors have been relatively benign. Even after controlling for the external environment it...

An Architecture for Privacy-Sensitive Ubiquitous Computing
- Jason I-an Hong; Jason I-an Hong
An Architecture for Privacy-Sensitive Ubiquitous Computing by Jason I-An Hong Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences University of California, Berkeley Professor James A. Landay, Chair Privacy is easily the most often-cited criticism of ubiquitous computing (ubicomp), and may be the greatest barrier to its long-term success. However, developers currently have little support in designing system architectures and in creating interactions that are effective in helping end-users manage their privacy. This dissertation provides three key contributions towards ameliorating this problem. The first contribution is an extensive analysis of end-user privacy needs, which were gathered through a variety...

In The Mood for Love: Intersections of Hong Kong Modernity
- Yue, Dr Audrey
This chapter takes Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-wai’s evocation of tête-bêche as a point of departure for examining the narrative of intersection in the film In The Mood for Love. As a point in movement, intersection consists of convergence and divergence. Convergence is explored in the film’s mood and functions as a critique of the politics of recent theorisations in Hong Kong cinema studies. Divergence is examined through space in the film’s narrative relation to the region, and temporality through its aesthetics of style. This chapter shows how Hong Kong modernity emerges as an intersection of regional, indigenous and global...
