In The Mood for Love: Intersections of Hong Kong Modernity
- Yue, Dr Audrey
This chapter takes Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-wai’s evocation of tête-bêche as a point of departure for examining the narrative of intersection in the film In The Mood for Love. As a point in movement, intersection consists of convergence and divergence. Convergence is explored in the film’s mood and functions as a critique of the politics of recent theorisations in Hong Kong cinema studies. Divergence is examined through space in the film’s narrative relation to the region, and temporality through its aesthetics of style. This chapter shows how Hong Kong modernity emerges as an intersection of regional, indigenous and global...

A study of business risks of public housing construction in Hong Kong and risk management methods adopted by contractors
- Lee, Kin-wang
The research conducted in this thesis studies the business risks considered as critical by construction contractors in the public housing construction industry in Hong Kong and the risk management methods adopted by these contractors. There is an inherent weakness in the public housing construction procurement in which price has been the overriding factor in the award of contracts and this has led to poor quality. A quantitative research method was adopted. The data for analysis included share price of listed construction contractors and other listed companies in Hong Kong. In addition, annual turnover of listed construction contractors from its company...

medicina popular.

A Heterogeneous Geographic Information Architecture For Hong Kong Infrastructure Systems
Introduction
Hong Kong is a major metropolis in the world. It has many large infrastructure systems, e.g. transportation
systems, rail roads, tunnels, airport facilities, electric power and telecommunication lifelines,
water supply and sewer systems, public works, etc., all of which provide the lifeline supports
to the populace in Hong Kong. The serviceability of these systems intimately affect Hong Kong's
economic growth, its competitiveness, productivity, and people's quality of life through the resulting
economic, social and environmental impacts of these systems.
Sound and effective strategies for growth depend on the availability of updated engineering data as
well as information on the social, demographic, economic, and geographical aspects of the...

Data Protection Legislation in Hong Kong: A Practical Perspective
- Eva Y. W. Wong
Hong Kong is an important financial, commercial and industrial centre in the rapidly
developing Far East region and information technology (IT) is used extensively in
both the private and public sectors. Unlike many western countries, there are no
information technology laws in Hong Kong at present, but the Hong Kong
Government is seriously considering legislation in this area. This paper examines
the current data protection practices in Hong Kong, discusses the issues raised in a
recently published consultative document, and deliberates the implications for
businesses and organisations if data protection law is effected in Hong Kong.

The Design of a High Performance Simultaneous Bidirectional MOS Driver
- Kin Hong Kan,Hong Kan
This thesis describes the design of a simultaneous bidirectional MOS driver on a
0:8m CMOS process. Simulation results show that the driver allow simultaneous
bidirectional digital signalling over the same pin at 400 MBits per second. The
driver operates with current mode signals to isolate the digital signal from power and
ground noise. A small chip with testing circuitry was implemented on a 1:2m CMOS
process.

A Multimodal Biometric System Using Fingerprint, Face, and Speech Anil Jain, Lin Hong, and Yatin Kulkarni
- Anil Jain,Lin Hong,Yatin Kulkarni
A biometric system which relies only on a single
biometric identifier in making a personal identification
is often not able to meet the desired performance
requirements. Identification based on multiple biometrics
represents an emerging trend. We introduce
a multimodal biometric system, which integrates face
recognition, fingerprint verification, and speaker verification
in making a personal identification. This system
takes advantage of the capabilities of each individual
biometrics. It can be used to overcome some
of the limitations of a single biometrics. Preliminary
experimental results demonstrate that the identity established
by such an integrated system is more reliable
than the identity established by a face recognition system,
a fingerprint verification system, and a fingerprint
verification system.

Student-Directed Learning: Hong Kong Experiences
- Doug Vogel,Chris Wagner,Louis Ma
Education is facing multiple challenges as we approach the next century. As
faculties broaden the range of instructional methods and approaches, increased
attention is being given to `student-directed' learning and effective use of technology
in the learning process. This paper explains and explores the concept of studentdirected
learning through development and use of a prototype environment for a
graduate course at the City University of Hong Kong. Experiences and student
feedback data are reported. The paper concludes with a discussion of learning
environment domain factors and future directions.

The WTO Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong: What's Next?
- Simon J. Evenett
Any assessment of the Hong Kong Ministerial Conference depends critically on the benchmark employed. Surely, compared to its predecessor, the Hong Kong Ministerial Conference was a success. Having said that, no major participant in that meeting and no commentator afterwards has suggested that enough progress was made that the end of the Doha Round is in sight. Although World Trade Organization (WTO) members are officially committed to making significant strides before 30 April 2006, there must be considerable doubt as to whether the Doha Round can be completed before Fast Track negotiating authority expires for the U.S. administration in mid-2007....

An Analysis of the Deposit-taking Market of Hong Kong
- Bob Chan,Bob Y. Chan,Terence Khoo
. This paper analyzes the deposit-taking market in Hong Kong for an extended period
prior to the deregulation of interest rates in 1994. We argue that banking regulations, in the forms
of branching restrictions and interest-rate ceilings, had created a monopsonistic market for
term bank deposits. As a result, banks in Hong Kong had earned a substantially wider interest-rate
margin than banks in other Asia-Pacific countries and the United States. Our analysis using
rate spreads is consistent with such a conjecture. The discrepancy in interest-rate spreads between
Hong Kong and the U.S. was mainly attributable to the lower deposit rates paid by Hong Kong
banks, which were...
