Molecular phylogenetics and the evolution of host plant associations in the nematode genus Fergusobia (Tylenchida : Fergusobiinae) - Ye, Weimin; Giblin-Davis, Robin M.; Davies, Kerrie A.; Purcell, Matthew Francis; Scheffer, S. J.; Taylor, Gary Stewart; Center, T. D.; Morris, K.; Thomas, W. Kelley
Fergusobia nematodes (Tylenchida: Fergusobiinae) and Fergusonina flies (Diptera: Fergusoninidae) are putative mutualists that develop together in galls formed in meristematic tissues of many species of the plant family Myrtaceae in Australasia. Fergusobia nematodes were sampled from a variety of myrtaceous hosts and gall types from Australia and one location in New Zealand between 1999 and 2006. Evolutionary relationships of these isolates were inferred from phylogenetic analyses of the DNA sequences of the nuclear ribosomal DNA near-full length small subunit (up to 1689 bp for 21 isolates), partial large subunit D2/D3 domain (up to 889 bp for 87 isolates), partial mitochondrial...

Successional trends in the characteristics of soil nematode communities in cropped and fallow lands in Senegal (Sonkorong) - E. Pate,N. Ndiaye-faye,J. Thioulouse,C. Villenave,T. Bongers,P. Cadet,D. Debouzie
Soil nematode communities in the 0--15 cm soil layer are used as indicators for describing the processes of fallow succession
in the semi-arid zone of West Africa (Senegal). Abundance of plant feeding nematodes, non-plant feeding nematodes, plant
parasite index (PPI), species richness and Shannon evenness of plant parasitic nematodes were measured at five stages of
succession: fields, early (1--3 years), intermediate (8--10 years), old (18--20 years) fallows, and forest stage. These nematological
indexes were analyzed simultaneously by multivariate analysis to show the indicative properties of nematode communities.
Overall, changes in abundance of nematode groups, PPI and diversity, show continuous trends from early fallow to mature
stages...

OCCURRENCE OF MELOIDOGYNE JAVANICA PARASITING ROOTS AND NODULES OF PEANUTS IN PARAGUAY - LORDELLO,RUBENS RODOLFO ALBUQUERQUE; LORDELLO,ANA INES LUCENA; GODOY,IGNÁCIO JOSÉ DE
The root-knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica (Treub, 1885) Chitwood, 1949, was identified in roots, nodules and shells of peanut plants (Arachis hypogaea L.), cv. Florman-INTA, collected from a field in Menno colony, Chaco Central region of Paraguay. Infected plants were observed in patches, showing wilting and drying of vegetative parts. Peanut had been grown ininterruptly for many years in the same area and patches had already been observed in the preceding year in cv. Starr. Nematodes collected from roots in this field reproduced on tomato cultivar rutgers and peanut cultivar florunner and produced egg-masses on roots, nodules and shells of cultivar...

Phytochemical investigation of the aerial parts and roots of Mucuna cinerea led to the isolation of a mixture of fatty acids, triacylglicerols, beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, stigmasterol glucoside, daucosterol, asperglaucide (4) and the isoflavonoids prunetin (1), genistein (2), medicarpin (3), daidzein (5), 7-O-alpha-glycopiranosyl daidzein (6). An in vitro bioassay was carried out with compounds 1-4, at the concentration of 50 and 5 mug mL-1 against the phytonematodes M. incognita and H. glycines. Although the four compounds showed some nematocidal property, the most active was (1), causing 70% mortality of M. incognita at the concentration of 50 mug mL-1.

mab-7 encodes a novel transmembrane protein that orchestrates sensory ray morphogenesis in C. elegans - Tsang, Shun-Wa; Nguyen, C. Q.; Hall, D. H.; Chow, King-Lau
The tapered sensory rays of the male C. elegans are important for successful male/hermaphrodite copulation. A group of ram (RAy Morphology abnormal) genes encoding modifying enzymes and transmembrane protein have been reported as key regulators controlling ray morphogenesis. Here we report the characterization of another component essential for this morphogenetic process encoded by mab-7. This gene is active in the hypodermis, structural cells, the body seam and several head neurons. It encodes a novel protein with a hydrophobic region at the N-terminus, an EGF-like motif, an ShKT motif and a long C-terminal tail. All these domains are shown to be...

Etiological and epidemiological studies on the red leaf disease of pineapple in Ghana - Awuah, RT; Department of Crop Science, Plant Pathology Unit, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana
;; Adzim, E; Department of Crop Science, Plant Pathology Unit, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana
;
Possible cause(s) of red leaf disease (RLD) of pineapple (Ananas comosus L.) in Ghana were examined through field observations, isolation of suspected organisms from roots of diseased plants, growing plants in potted steam-sterilised and unsterilised natural field soils. Others included detection of the pineapple closterovirus (PCV) from symptomatic and healthy pineapple leaves using tissue blot immunoassay (TBIA). Effects of soil moisture, soil fertility, sucker condition and light intensity on the disease were studied in pots while some factor combinations were studied in mini plots in the field. Diseased plants from the field had reduced root systems and had Neosartorya fischeri....
