The UCIMED Quality Assurance Unit began in 2010 the analysis of characteristics of the incoming student population in order to provide an input to the chair of the university to design leading methodological strategies to improve required skills to achieve the training objectives, and prevent situation of dropout. Using a structured formulary, the socio demography profile and academic-cultured index of cohorts between 2010 and 2014 were collected. The results indicate the strengths and weaknesses of the student population and provide bases of management of the academic curriculum.

We present the result of a review of several colleges' curricula in the area ofhuman health. We found that the medical and nursing careers account for almost 50% of academic offerings in ethics courses. These are mainly courses on professional ethics and deontology and are almost completely devoid of issues related with biomedical research. In public and private universities the emphasis is placed on bioethics of clinical practice and on some special issues of the doctor-patient relationship. It is required a training of trainers, which means, the training of university teachers with a particular emphasis on bioethics.

The advance in knowledge of the human genome, can explain the appearance of certain cancers grouped in the same family. The identification, early, high-risk people allows them to be addressed in a different way, from an individualized assessment of the risk of developing cancer, to strategies for prevention, treatment and appropriate follow-up risks. The SCMOH is the most common of the SPCs. The CM caused by inherited mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2 differ from sporadic and family not caused by these genes in their morphological, immunophenotypic and molecular, therefore, the selection of individuals and families in which there is a...

drugs (5). Other problems probably due to these drugs are the increase in circulating lipids and fatty mass, obesity and fat redistribution, and metabolic disturbances that may lead to insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, and, ultimately, to increased risk of cardiovascular disease (5-12). Early in the epidemic, it was common for AIDS patients to present with a story of involuntary weight loss, and as many as 40-90 % of them were importantly undernourished, a condition related to increased mortality (13-16). The nutritional status of these patients changed remarkably with the advent of cART in the 1990s (13), and a high prevalence...

Oral iron supplementation is usually the first choice for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) because of its effectiveness and low cost. But unfortunately in many iron deficient conditions, oral iron is a less than the ideal treatment mainly because of adverse events related to the gastrointestinal tract as well as the long course required to treat anemia and replenish body iron stores. The first iron product for intravenous use was high-molecular-weight iron dextran. However, dextran-containing intravenous iron preparations are associated with an elevated risk of anaphylactic reactions, which made physicians reluctant to prescribe intravenous iron in the treatment...

Abstract: The sodium / bicarbonate cotransporter (NBC) is, with the Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE), an important alkalinizing mechanism that maintains cellular intracellular pH (pHi). In the heart exists at least three isoforms of NBC, one that pro-motes the co-influx of 1 molecule of Na+ per 1molecule of HCO3-(electroneutral isoform; nNBC) and two others that gen-erates the co-influx of 1 molecule of Na+ per 2 molecules of HCO3- (electrogenic isoforms; eNBC). In addition, the eNBC generates an anionic repolarizing current that modulate the cardiac action potential (CAP), adding to such isoforms the relevance to modulate the electrophysiological function of the heart. Angiotensin...

DNA sequencing confirms the involvement of Leishmania (L.) amazonensis in american tegumentary leishmaniasis in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Clinics. 2008;63:451-6. INTRODUCTION: American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) represents one of the most important public health issues in the world. An increased number of autochthonous cases of ATL in the Northeastern region of São Paulo State has been documented in the last few years, leading to a desire to determine the Leishmania species implicated. METHODS: PCR followed by DNA sequencing was carried out to identify a 120bp fragment from the universal kDNA...
