  4. Regulation of the Cardiac Sodium/Bicarbonate Cotransporter by Angio- tensin II: Potential Contribution to Structural, Ionic and Electrophysi-

Abstract: The sodium / bicarbonate cotransporter (NBC) is, with the Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE), an important alkalinizing mechanism that maintains cellular intracellular pH (pHi). In the heart exists at least three isoforms of NBC, one that pro-motes the co-influx of 1 molecule of Na+ per 1molecule of HCO3-(electroneutral isoform; nNBC) and two others that gen-erates the co-influx of 1 molecule of Na+ per 2 molecules of HCO3- (electrogenic isoforms; eNBC). In addition, the eNBC generates an anionic repolarizing current that modulate the cardiac action potential (CAP), adding to such isoforms the relevance to modulate the electrophysiological function of the heart. DNA sequencing confirms the involvement of Leishmania (L.) amazonensis in american tegumentary leishmaniasis in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Clinics. 2008;63:451-6. INTRODUCTION: American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) represents one of the most important public health issues in the world. An increased number of autochthonous cases of ATL in the Northeastern region of São Paulo State has been documented in the last few years, leading to a desire to determine the Leishmania species implicated. METHODS: PCR followed by DNA sequencing was carried out to identify a 120bp fragment from the universal kDNA...

The role of astrocytes in brain function has evolved over the last decade, from support cells to active participants in the neuronal synapse through the release of “gliotransmitters.” Astrocytes express receptors for most neurotransmitters and respond to them through Ca2+ intracellular oscillations and propagation of intercellular Ca2+ waves. While such waves are able to propagate among neighboring astrocytes through gap junctions, thereby activating several astrocytes simultaneously, they can also trigger the release of gliotransmitters, including glutamate, d-serine, glycine, ATP, adenosine, or GABA. There are several mechanisms by which gliotransmitter release occurs, including functional hemichannels. These gliotransmitters can activate neighboring astrocytes...

OBJECTIVE: To analyze HIV/AIDS positive individual’s perception and attitudes regarding dental services. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-four subjects (30.0 % of women and 70.0 % of men) from Nuevo León, Mexico, took part in the study (2014). They filled out structured, analytical, self-administered, anonymous questionnaires. Besides the sociodemographic variables, the perception regarding public and private dental services and related professionals was evaluated, as well as the perceived stigma associated with HIV/AIDS, through a Likert-type scale. The statistical evaluation included a factorial and a non-hierarchical cluster analysis. RESULTS: Social inequalities were found regarding the search for public and private dental professionals...

This study described a group of strains obtained from a slaughter house in Mendoza, in terms of their pathogenic factors, serotype, antibiotype and molecular profile. Ninety one rectal swabs and one hun-dred eight plating samples taken from carcasses of healthy cattle intended for meat consumption were analyzed. Both the swab and the plate samples were processed to analyze the samples for the pres-ence of virulence genes by PCR: stx1, stx2, eae and astA. The Stx positive strains were confirmed by citotoxicity assay in Vero cells. The isolates were subsequently investigated for their O:H serotype, antimicrobial susceptibility and molecular profile by...

The specific treatment available for Fabry disease (FD) is enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with agalsidase alfa or beta. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of ERT for FD. Only double-blind, randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing agalsidase alfa or beta and placebo were included. ERT with either agalsidase alfa or beta was considered similar for the purposes of analysis. Ten RCTs were identified, which showed improvements in neuropathic pain, in heart abnormalities and in globotriaosylceramide (GL-3) levels. A meta-analysis showed increased odds for fever, rigors, development of IgG antibodies to agalsidase, and no sig-nificant...
