Do Open-Cycle Hatcheries Relying on Tourism Conserve Sea Turtles? Sri Lankan Developments and Economic–Ecological Considerations
- Tisdell, Clem; Wilson, Clevo
By combining economic analysis of markets with ecological parameters, this article considers the role that tourism-based sea turtle hatcheries (of an open-cycle type) can play in conserving populations of sea turtles. Background is provided on the nature and development of such hatcheries in Sri Lanka. The modeling facilitates the assessment of the impacts of turtle hatcheries on the conservation of sea turtles and enables the economic and ecological consequences of tourism, based on such hatcheries, to be better appreciated. The results demonstrate that sea turtle hatcheries serving tourists can make a positive contribution to sea turtle conservation, but that their...

Resistance training conserves fat-free mass and resting energy expenditure following weight loss
- Hunter, Gary R.; Byrne, Nuala M.; Sirikul, Bovorn; Fernández, José R.; Zuckerman, Paul A.; Darnell, Betty E.; Gower, Barbara A.
Objective: To determine what effect diet-induced 12 kg weight loss in combination with exercise training has on body composition and resting energy expenditure (REE) in premenopausal African-American (AA) and European-American (EA) women.--- Methods and Procedures: This study was a longitudinal, randomized weight loss clinical intervention, with either aerobic (AT), resistance (RT), or no exercise training (NT). Forty-eight AA and forty-six EA premenopausal overweight (BMI between 27 and 30) women underwent weight loss to a BMI <25. Body composition (densitometry), REE (indirect calorimetry), maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), and muscular strength (isometric elbow flexion) were evaluated when subjects were in energy balance.---...

Altitude engine test of a turbofan exhaust gas mixer to conserve fuel
- Cullom, R. R.; Johnsen, R. L.
A comparison of the specific fuel consumption was made with and without an internal mixer installed in a low bypass ratio, confluent flow turbofan engine. Tests were conducted at several Mach numbers and altitudes for core to fan stream total temperature ratios of 2.0 and 2.5 and mixing lengths of L/D = 0.95 and 1.74. For these test conditions, the specific fuel consumption improvement varied from 2.5 to 4.0 percent.

The evolution of rotating stars. III - Predicted surface rotation velocities for stars which conserve total angular momentum
- Endal, A. S.; Sofia, S.
Predicted surface rotation velocities for Population I stars at 10, 7, 5, 3, and 1.5 solar masses are presented. The surface velocities were computed for angular momentum with no radial redistribution, complete redistribution, and partial redistribution as predicted by consideration of circulation currents in rotating stars. Near the main sequence, rotational effects can reduce the moment of inertia of a star, so nonrotating models underestimate the expected velocities for evolving stars. On the red giant branch, angular momentum redistribution reduces the surface velocity by a factor of 2 or more, relative to the velocity expected for no radial redistribution. This...

A Producer’s Propensity to Conserve Framework: Application to a US and Australian Conservation Program
- Eigenraam, M.; Doering, O.; Spinelli, F.
Increasing recognition of the environmental impact of agriculture has led to increasing public activity around the world encouraging public conservation programs. Different countries have taken different program approaches to accomplish this. The comparison and contrast here is between Australia and the United States, examining the CREP program in the U.S. and the Eco Tender program in Australia. A different historical experience in the U.S. sets certain parameters that are expected in their conservation programs. To some extent, the Australian program could take more of a clean slate approach. The Australian program is able to take a broader landscape approach, specifically...
