In this paper age-affected change in cranial morphology in the late population of the Jujuy Puna were evaluated. The sample consisted of 372 skulls of both sexes, in which five age classes (children, youth, adult, mature adult and senile) were determined and 31 metric variables were measured. Univariate statistics was used to carry out the analysis.  Age-related morphological changes in the individuals analyzed were expressed in most of the studied variables. Growth prevailed until adult class and then growth stabilization takes place, with some variation. In adult individuals, major changes occur in the face because it has a slower growth...

Küffer, Claudio F.; Colantonio, Sonia Edith; Celton, Dora E.
Tulumba parish has hardly been studied from a biodemographic viewpoint. However, previous research suggests a more marked tendency toward endogamous behavior than in other regions of Córdoba province during the late colonial period. The aim of this study has been to examine the end of the pre-independentist period through the censuses of 1778, 1795, and 1813 to identify the changes that took place, along with various determining factors that may have been involved. Data sources consisted of the above-mentioned censuses and baptismal records chronologically close to them, for both Spanish and mixed groups. The isonymy method and others derived from...

In recent years, the approach to the relationship between anthropology and its subjects of interest has been noticeably modified. These transformations, which can be seen as the development of a new paradigm, highlight the existence of a new signification in the relationship between the different actors involved. Thus, the researcher is faced with the challenge of developing creative approaches with a sustainable line of research, and without detriment to the different actors in question. In this context, the anthropological collections –which remain in the guard of different museums and whose constitutive nature is diverse– have a great potential as pieces...

The aim of this paper is to contribute to reflection, from the experience gained in the field of forensic anthropology as members of a team with institutional affiliation in the formal system of science and technology, through history applied to specific cases of community demand. As an example of these activities, two specific cases related to Gran Chaco will be discussed. The first one was a request made to the forensic anthropology team of the Museum of La Plata” by the wichi community "Pajarito" (Afwenchelhos) through the Centro del Hombre Antiguo Chaqueño (Las Lomitas, Formosa) for the excavation of their...

Guevara, Antonela; Gallardo Pantoja, Cristian; Suárez, Miguel; Salerno, Melisa A.; Valenzuela, Luciano; D'Angelo del Campo, Manuel D.; Palacio, Patricia I.; Guichón, Ricardo Aníbal; García Laborde, Pamela; Motti, Josefina; Martucci, Marilina; Casali, Romina; Huilinao, Florencio; Maldonado, María; Salamanca, Mirta; Bilte, Brenda
We present the experience of collaboration between a research team and members of Native American communities in two different towns, Puerto Santa Cruz and Rio Grande. We reflect on how to establish and strengthen links between researchers and indigenous communities, how to get new ways of working together to make effective the restitution of human remains, as well as to coordinate future actions and the continuity of research, redirecting them to areas of common interest, etc. We particularly discuss the establishment of “Co-managed Transitory Reservoirs” to host human remains of native people. Although this strategy does not resolve the final...

Since some decades, aboriginal communities have been demanding to the Museo de La Plata that human remains be restored to the communities they belong to and removed from public exhibition. Regulations that recognize the rights of indigenous people, together with debates within the academic community, have contributed to the development of institutional policies on the treatment and care of human remains. The goal of this work is to present the events, debates and decisions related to the modes of exhibition of human remains in the Museum de La Plata. The main shift occurred in 2006 when it was decided that...

    Ametrano, Silvia Juana
The return of cacique Inacayal´s remains to Tecka town,Chubut, in 1994, marked the beginning of the restitution processes at the Museum de La Plata. These processes have taken place in two distinct periods differentiated by the adoption of an institutional policy. The restitution of human remains carried out during the first period was performed in compliance with national laws enacted specifically for the occasion. The second period includes those made since 2006, when the museum decided to deal with and analyze each claim. The factors involved in each case highlight the importance of examination and documentation of human remains, as...

    Tamagno, Liliana
The aim of this article is to provide some reflection from the field of social anthropology to the discussion concerning the treatment of human remains of archaeological and bioanthropological interest. This is the result a long-term research project based on the observation of the present socio-cultural dynamics of indigenous peoples, their presence, their demands, their knowledge, learning and utopias. These reflections are the product of a dialogue with the field theory itself and also with the contributions made by indigenous people as well as by specialists, which whom we have shared a number of events, both academic and extra-academic. Research...

Barboza, María C.; Mendonça, Osvaldo Juan; Bordach, María A.
We present here the results of an experience using a set of techniques for sex determination on human bone remains recovered from the Formative archaeological site Til. 20 (Mulqui Site), Jujuy Province, Argentina (Bordach et al., 1999). A total of 16 adult individuals were studied. Given the chronologic characteristics (Formative), this bone assemblage can be considered unique among other bone materials from the same period in Argentina (Mendonça et al., 2002). Our goal was to study the general pattern of sexual variability among adult individuals in the Mulqui Site series. We compared the information given by the bone markers according...

Barboza, María C.; Mendonça, Osvaldo Juan; Bordach, María A.
We present here the results of a test performed on a set of adult mandibles of known sex, using a new technique (Loth y Henneberg, 1996) to determine sex, based on the analysis of the morphology of the posterior ramus of the mandible. Our observations confirm former ones by other researchers working on similar sample sizes, regarding the alleged efficiency of this technique. We conclude that the new technique does not contribute per se to improve the efficiency of those variables that are commonly used to estimate sex from the morphology of the mandible.

Fertility, like most of demographic variables, shows differences according to the population considered. In this paper, fertility behavior in rural population and in Córdoba City (both Córdoba Province) is analyzed. Level and structure are described considering women's age and marital status. From the data of the 1991 Census, total fertility, age rates, distribution of complete offspring size and mean distance to natural fertility are estimated by using ad-hoc demographic methodology, and an estimate of reproductive success is obtained. All measures are higher in the rural population. Among other reasons, this higher fertility is due to the earlier mean age at...

Tessone, Augusto; Zangrando, Francisco Atilio; Valencio, Susana A.; Panarello, Héctor O.
The aim of this paper is to apply stable carbon isotope analyses to study the diet of hunter-gatherer populations that inhabited the Beagle channel area during the Late and Mid Holocene. Previous stable isotope studies in this region showed a greater variation in diet than that expected from ethnographical and archaeological sources. We present here five new δ¹³C values on human bone collagen which modify the picture emerged from these previous studies, allowing us to postulate an important contribution of marine resources to the diet of these populations.

The actual action lines related to the use of stable isotopes in Tierra del Fuego Island are orientated to mark off spatial and temporal variation factors (lack of radiocarbonic data) and their relation with other investigation lines as life style. Since the European arrival to Tierra del Fuego in the 18 th century, life style of historical populations has changed. The objectives of this study are to explore the variability of resources consumed by males and females using isotopic information obtained on bones of individuals from different geographical sectors of the Island (North. Southeast and Beagle Channel) and to determine...
