Barboza, María C.; Mendonça, Osvaldo Juan; Bordach, María A.
We present here the results of an experience using a set of techniques for sex determination on human bone remains recovered from the Formative archaeological site Til. 20 (Mulqui Site), Jujuy Province, Argentina (Bordach et al., 1999). A total of 16 adult individuals were studied. Given the chronologic characteristics (Formative), this bone assemblage can be considered unique among other bone materials from the same period in Argentina (Mendonça et al., 2002). Our goal was to study the general pattern of sexual variability among adult individuals in the Mulqui Site series. We compared the information given by the bone markers according...

Barboza, María C.; Mendonça, Osvaldo Juan; Bordach, María A.
We present here the results of a test performed on a set of adult mandibles of known sex, using a new technique (Loth y Henneberg, 1996) to determine sex, based on the analysis of the morphology of the posterior ramus of the mandible. Our observations confirm former ones by other researchers working on similar sample sizes, regarding the alleged efficiency of this technique. We conclude that the new technique does not contribute per se to improve the efficiency of those variables that are commonly used to estimate sex from the morphology of the mandible.

Fertility, like most of demographic variables, shows differences according to the population considered. In this paper, fertility behavior in rural population and in Córdoba City (both Córdoba Province) is analyzed. Level and structure are described considering women's age and marital status. From the data of the 1991 Census, total fertility, age rates, distribution of complete offspring size and mean distance to natural fertility are estimated by using ad-hoc demographic methodology, and an estimate of reproductive success is obtained. All measures are higher in the rural population. Among other reasons, this higher fertility is due to the earlier mean age at...

Tessone, Augusto; Zangrando, Francisco Atilio; Valencio, Susana A.; Panarello, Héctor O.
The aim of this paper is to apply stable carbon isotope analyses to study the diet of hunter-gatherer populations that inhabited the Beagle channel area during the Late and Mid Holocene. Previous stable isotope studies in this region showed a greater variation in diet than that expected from ethnographical and archaeological sources. We present here five new δ¹³C values on human bone collagen which modify the picture emerged from these previous studies, allowing us to postulate an important contribution of marine resources to the diet of these populations.

The actual action lines related to the use of stable isotopes in Tierra del Fuego Island are orientated to mark off spatial and temporal variation factors (lack of radiocarbonic data) and their relation with other investigation lines as life style. Since the European arrival to Tierra del Fuego in the 18 th century, life style of historical populations has changed. The objectives of this study are to explore the variability of resources consumed by males and females using isotopic information obtained on bones of individuals from different geographical sectors of the Island (North. Southeast and Beagle Channel) and to determine...

  8. Apellidos y sistema Rh (D/d) en poblaciones jujeñas

Morales, Jorge; Alfaro Gómez, Emma Laura; Dipierri, José E.; Bejarano, Ignacio Felipe
Previous studies indicate that the populations from Jujuy Province show a close association among the ethnic classification of the individuals, based on the surnames, and different genetic markers (ABO and holandric haplotypes). The aim of this work was analyzed in these populations. located on an altitudinal gradient, the relationship between the D/d alleles of the Rh system and the surnames classified according to its origin. The Rh phenotypes of 7 178 individuals were grouped according to both, geographical (highlands or lowlands) and surname (foreign and autochthonous) origin. For each group the frequencies of d and D alleles were determined. The...

    Kozameh, Livia Febes
The relationship between diet and ingestion frequency produces remarkable differences in masticatory apparatus between human beings. Variation are, in this case, analyzed among residents of the same urban group. The purpose of this paper is to examine the behaviour of those variations among young, adult and old people from both sexes. The possible relationship between caries and the lack of teeth, related with age and sex, was also considered. Samples consist of 106 patients from different odontoligic consulting rooms in the city of Rosario. Information was taken from food habits and basic diet. The carious pathologies and the lack of...

The aim of this research was to test the usefulness of dermatoglyphics in the discrimination of three populations identified as isolated by earlier demographic-historic and demographic-genetic studies. The samples were collected from the localities of Salsacate, Chancaní and Parroquia, in the Pocho Department (Córdoba, Argentina). A sample from Córdoba city was also added for comparative purposes. In total, 377 individuals were studied. Twenty-two digital quantitative variables were analyzed. Univariate and multivariate analysis of the variance, Mahalanobis´s distances and multiple discriminant analysis showed significant interpopulation differences. The observed dermatoglyphic affinities conform to the geographical and demographical patterns of the studied populations....

The stress which the prehistoric population of "Las Pirguas" (Salta) underwent was analyzed from a bioarcheologic point of view. Metric, nonmetric and pathologic indicators of the dental analysis and daily life activities were considered. Results from former analysis, together with contribution of new information, have been recorded. Out of all these studies, it was concluded that the adaptability cost for this group was very high.

  14. Acerca de una propuesta pedagógica

Fernández Varela, Virginia B.; Glovatzky, Elba N.; Pupkin, Patricia R.
The object of this paper is to make an approach to the pedagogical analysis about teaching-learning strategies in Biological Anthropology and Paleoanthropology employed in the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA). The particular case of a research and difussion work done by students in 1992/93 within the Cognitive Theory frame, was considered. According to this, teaching-learning is a constructive and dialectical process where the teacher is its fundamental promoter if he/she activates the management of information aquisition in the students. Our intention, here, is to demonstrate that it is not enough to modify the curriculum contents but to introduce some changes...

    Ramirez Rozzi, Fernando V.
Enamel microstructure analysis has opened again the discussion about tooth development in Plio-Pleistocene hominids. Two incremental lines are present in enamel, with a circadian and circaseptan periodicity. Enamel microstructure is the result of dental development patterns. Counts of incremental lines allowed to estimate the time of crown formation and, in juvenile individuals, the age at death. Some dental development patterns were estimated from enamel microanatomy studies. Plio-Pleistocene hominids have shown their own dental development characterized by a short crown formation time in incisors and premolars.

Dejean, Cristina Beatriz; Niborski, Ricardo; Arrayago, Alicia M.; Kohan, Abraham I.; Rey, Jorge Alberto; Carnese, Francisco R.
In the present report, we analyzed the prevalence of serological markers of some infections , in the mapuche groups from Cerro Policia (CP) and Aguada Guzmán (AG), in the Río Negro Province. The included studies were the following: determinations in sera of antibodies against Treponema pallidum, Trypanosoma cruzii, Hepatitis B virus surface Antigen (HBsAg), antibodies against Hepatitis B core (anti-HBc), hepatitis A virus (anti-HAV) and against Echinococcus granulosus. A total of 160 and 83 samples were studied in CP and AG respectively. Results show high prevalence of anti-HAV in CP (89.2%) and in AG (77.1%) and of echinococcocis, 10.6% in...

Goicoechea, Alicia Susana; Coria, Marcela; Haedo, Ana Silvia; Crognier, Emile; Carnese, Francisco R.
In this study we estimated the genetic distance among different Indian groups from Chaco and Patagonia (Argentina). For this purpose we employed 5 loci of blood groups: Rh, MNSs, P, Duffy and Kidd. The genetic distance was calculated by the method of Cavalli-Sforza and Edwards (1967) (Program BYOSIS). We noted the union of the mataco-chulupi, wich live in the same region and belong to the same linguistic stock. The chiriguano-chane, also, showed a strong association, despite they don´t have linguistic affinities. However, they share a common ethnohistory. Tribes of Chaco presentes differences with respect to the mapuche of the Patagonia....

  18. Distancias genéticas en poblaciones del NOA

Acreche, Noemí; Caruso, Graciela; Albeza, María V.
Most works on hemathological polimorphisms are focussed on population description, in our country. This shows the importance of the study of the relationships among groups based on the valuable information already published. Those groups are mainly known by their cultural traits. In the north-west of Argentina (NOA), aboriginal communities have been included in four linguistic families. These represent affinities established not only in function of language, but also considering the characteristics of their productiva systems, religion and social organization. As regards Genetics, it is important to understand the microevolutionary processes in the zone. Samples of thirteen populations were taken from...

Scarano, Eduardo R.; Crivos, Marta; Prati, Marcelo
Considering the relevance attained by the use of experimental techniques in contemporary research in anthropology, particularly in archaeology and biological anthropology, we have noticed in our study that the latter developments do not meet the educational needs of future professional anthropologists. This conclusion results from a seminar conducted by members of Lógica and Antropología Biológica 1 from the Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata. A group of study was consequently born. lts first task was to review some articles published in Argentina, suggesting the application of experimental techniques as a means of anthropological...

Some of the factors which alter the nutritional environment in uterus are not well-known yet. One of them is the variation in maternal blood supply to the fetuses. The purpose of the present study is to determine: (1) the effect of experimentally bound uterine vessels on body weight and length, and on craniofacial growth; (2) whether the neurocranium and face may be differentially altered by the vessel binding; and (3) if the differences found may be related with the position of fetuses in the uterine horns. Three groups of adult Wistar rats were used: (a) control, without any kind of...
