  5. The Long-Run Efficiency of United States Sugar Policy

    Thomas H. Bates
The adequacy of future sugar avallabilities for United States consumption requirements since the 1960 embargo on Cuban sugar is a matter of con-tinuing concern. This article gives estimates of the long-run effects of this embargo on the world and the United States sugar economies as well as of the efficiency of current United States long-run sugar supply policy. Long-run supply and demand functions were estimated and a general equilibrium competitive model was constructed. Comparison of the results of this competitive model with projected results of the present United States sugar supply program demonstrates the potential economic ineffi-ciencies of the program....

This paper revisits the role of business saving in the economy by critically scrutinizing the existing macroeoconomic and corporate finance literatures. We assemble and exploit a broad international, unbalanced panel of 47 countries over 1995-2013 on saving and investment by institutional sector to shed new light on the relevance of business saving for private saving and investment around the world. We show that businesses contribute on average more than 50 % of national saving around the world. Using this unique dataset, we find evidence of partial piercing of the corporate veil: a $1 increase in business saving gives rise to...

Using the Black-Scholes method for estimating high-cost illness insurance premiums in Colombia Liliana Chicaíza * & David Cabedo** a b s t r a c t This article applied the Black-Scholes option valuation formula to calculating high-cost illness reinsurance premiums in the Colombian health system. The coverage pattern used in reinsuring high-cost illnesses was replicated by means of a European call option contract. The option’s relevant variables and parameters were adapted to an insurance market context. The premium estimated by the Black-Scholes method fell...

  13. An Empirical Analysis of Mark-ups in the Argentine Manufacturing Sector

Facultad De Ciencias Económicas; La Plata; Serie Documentos De Trabajo; Irene Brambilla; Darío Tortarolo; Documento De Trabajo Nro; Irene Brambilla
In this paper, we estimate mark-ups with plant level production data for Argentina from a structural model of cost-minimizing producers, as proposed by De Loecker and Warzynski (2012). We explore systematic differences across industries and plants. Our main findings are that mark-ups are higher in capital-intensive industries, and for plants that are more productive, larger, and more capital-intensive. Our findings are consistent with theories that predict larger mark-ups for more efficient firms and for higher quality products.

  18. Targeted Advertising with Vertically Differentiated Products

Facultad Ciencias; Económicas Empresariales; Lola Esteban; José M. Hernández
Abstract: This paper presents an incomplete information game of pricing and targeted advertising with vertically differentiated products. Firms have incomplete information about production costs and can inform consumers about price and product characteristics by either using the mass media, which reaches the whole market, or the specialized media, which reaches only the most eager consumers. In this framework, we show that pure strategy Bayesian Nash equilibria exist, and that, as compared to mass advertising, targeting leads to higher prices. Further, we offer an explanation for permanent market fragmentation, which is related to high production costs, and prove that the probability...

  19. Educational Upgrading and Returns to Skills in Latin America. Evidence from a Supply-Demand Framework, 1990-2010.

Centro De Estudios; Laborales Y Sociales; Maestría En Economía; Facultad De Ciencias Económicas; La Plata; Leonardo Gasparini; Sebastián Galiani; Cruces Y Pablo Acosta; Leonardo Gasparini; Sebastián Galiani; Guillermo Cruces; Pablo Acosta
Abstract: It has been argued that a factor behind the decline in income inequality in Latin America in the 2000s was the educational upgrading of its labor force. Between 1990 and 2010, the proportion of the labor force in the region with at least secondary education increased from 40 to 60 percent. Concurrently, returns to secondary education completion fell throughout the past two decades, while the 2000s saw a reversal in the increase in the returns to tertiary education experienced in the 1990s. This paper studies the evolution of wage differentials and the trends in the supply of workers by...

  20. E07/185 Incentives and Promotion in Wage Hierarchies

De La; Facultat De Ciències; Econòmiques I Empresarials; Francesc Dilmé; Departament De Teoria Econòmica; Facultat Ciències; Econòmiques Empresarials
Abstract: Most of the large firms organization schemes consist in hierarchical structures of tiers with different wage levels. Traditionally the existence of this kind of organizations has been associated to the separation of productive and managerial or supervision tasks and to differences in the skills of the workers. However, many firms now employ workers with similar skills, and then the hierarchical structure can be related to an incentive scheme to ensure that workers supply effort. The model we present investigates how firm owners should determine the optimal wage distribution in order to maximize profits. JEL Classification: J31, L23, M11,M51.
