101. Combining Numerical and Linguistic Information in Group Decision Making - M. Delgado; M. Delgado; F. Herrera; L. Martínez; F. Herrera; E. Herrera-viedma; E. Herrera-viedma
People give information about their personal preferences in many different ways, depending on their background. This paper deals with group decision making problems in which the solution depends on information of a different nature, i.e., assuming that the experts express their preferences with numerical or linguistic values. The aim of this paper is to present a proposal for this problem. We introduce a fusion operator for numerical and linguistic information. This operator combines linguistic values (assessed in the same label set) with numerical ones (assessed in the interval [0,1]). It is based on two transformation methods between numerical and linguistic...

102. Choice Processes for Non-Homogeneous Group Decision Making in Linguistic Setting - F. Herrera; F. Herrera; E. Herrera-viedma; E. Herrera-viedma; J. L. Verdegay; J. L. Verdegay
Several choice processes of alternatives for non-homogeneous group decision making problems, assuming linguistic preference relations for expressing the opinions of individuals and linguistic values for expressing their respective power or importance degrees, are presented. These processes are designed using two choice degrees of alternatives based on the concept of fuzzy majority: quantifier guided linguistic dominance degree and quantifier guided linguistic non-dominance degree, being the last one a generalization of Orlovski's non-dominated alternative concept. In order to deal with non-weighted linguistic information, the linguistic ordered weighted averaging (LOWA) operator is applied. To deal with weighted linguistic information, three operators of linguistic...

103. On the Linguistic Approach in Multi-Person Decision Making - F. Herrera; Herrera Herrera-Viedma
. This contribution presents a description on the linguistic modelling in multiperson decision making. The linguistic approach in decision making, the aggregation of linguistic information, a decision process and some open research questions are discussed. Keywords: Linguistic modelling, multi-person decision making, aggregation, choice processes, consensus. 1. INTRODUCTION Human beings are constantly making decisions in most of their day-to-day activities. Decision making consists of finding the best option from a feasible set. Many decision making processes, in the real world, take place in an environment in which the goals, contraints and consequences of possible actions are not precisely known. The application...

: In this article we will try to re-define some key concepts in the field of Study Abroad, as well as describe the psychological and linguistic processes that take place in US university students while they are in international exchange programs in Spain. We will try to analyse the three main types of university programs that we have established and their conceptual implications. Likewise, we will propose a set of stages, processes and measures that all international students should undergo in order to achieve a successful social linguistic and cultural integration in the host country. For that reason, we will...

105. A Proposal for Improving the Accuracy of Linguistic Modeling - O. Cordon (Cordón); F. Herrera; F. Herrera
Nowadays, Linguistic Modeling is considered to be one of the most important areas of application for Fuzzy Logic. Descriptive Mamdani-type Fuzzy Rule-Based Systems (FRBSs), the ones used to perform this task, provide a human-readable description of the model in the form of linguistic rules, which is a desirable characteristic in many problems. Unfortunately, interpretability and accuracy are contradictory requirements in the field of modeling. Due to this reason, in many cases the linguistic model designed is not accurate to a sufficient degree and has to be discarded and replaced by other less interpretable but more accurate models (fuzzy models generated...

107. Linguistic Measures Based on Fuzzy Coincidence for Reaching Consensus in Group Decision Making - F. Herrera; F. Herrera; E. Herrera-viedma; E. Herrera-viedma; J. L. Verdegay; J. L. Verdegay
Assuming a linguistic framework, a model for the consensus reaching problem in heterogeneous group decision making is proposed. This model contains two types of linguistic consensus measures: linguistic consensus degrees and linguistic proximities to guide the consensus reaching process. These measures evaluate the current consensus state in three levels of action: level of the pairs of alternatives, level of the alternatives, and level of the relation. They are based on a fuzzy characterization of the concept of coincidence and they are obtained by means of several conjuction functions for handling linguistic weighted information, the LOWA operator for aggregating linguistic information,...

This paper introduces and provides a formal definition for ILT (including the most recent developments), and suggests future ILT application in areas that could profit from their properties. II. INTERPOLATED LINGUISTIC TERMS (ILT) Before presenting a formal definition of an Interpolated Linguistic Term, we need to introduce some terminology used in this paper (see Fig. 2), and a set of restrictions that are necessary to implement ILTs

117. Encoding Linguistic Corpora - Nancy Ide
This paper describes the motivation and design of the Corpus Encoding Standard (CES) (Ide, et al., (1996); Ide, 1998), an encoding standard for linguistic corpora intended to meet the need for the development of standardized encoding practices for linguistic corpora. The CES identifies a minimal encoding level that corpora must achieve to be considered standardized in terms of descriptive representation (marking of structural and linguistic information). It also provides encoding conventions for more extensive encoding and for linguistic annotation, as well as general architecture for representing corpora annotated for linguistic features. The CES has been developed taking into account several practical realities surrounding the encoding of corpora intended for use in language engineering research and applications. Full documentation...

119. A Fuzzy Approach to Complex Linguistic Query Based Image Retrieval - Swarup Medasani And; Swarup Medasani; Raghu Krishnapuram
The current trend in the rapid growth of on-line image databases has brought forth several innovative approaches to content-based image retrieval. Most current techniques retrieve images based on an example image or object shapes/features extracted from images. Retrieval based on linguistic queries has not recieved much attention. In this paper, we present a fuzzy connective approach to handle complex linguistic queries consisting of multiple attributes. We represent each (fuzzy) attribute in a complex query by a (multi-dimensional) membership function. The degree to which an image satisfies the attribute is obtained by finding the membership value of the feature vector corresponding...
