Gómez Rendón, Jorge; Salazar Proaño, Diana Carolina

In this context, the recovery process of Andwa is of special importance as it deals with an extinct language. The particular methodology required for its reclamation represents new challenges in the fields of research and education. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the history of the Andwa people and language in Ecuador as well as of the process of documentation leading to its reintroduction in education and community spaces.

The process of making lists has given rise to reflections in a range of disciplines, from history and archaeology to psychology, linguistics and anthropology. This article reports a number of these contributions, and describes the value of lists as a linguistic process for planning, accuracy and conceptual analysis, specifically related to writing and language learning. It presents examples of lists written by children in preschool and elementary school, from an extensive corpus of children’s writing. The activity of making lists is a method of helping students both in their earliest writing assignments and in later text analysis and production. Teachers using these procedures boost not only the lexical learning of lists, but also the cognitive operations for categorizing, planning...

    Gonzalez Boluda, Mariana
All Foreign Language manuals attempt to integrate the cultural element for the language classrooms but it is critical to analyze how effectively this cultural element is incorporated in the books. In many instances the objectives related to linguistic and cultural diversity are poorly presented and contextualized. This paper analyzes texts and images extracted from a particular manual due to the discussion and controversy that some of its images and cultural content provoked in the classroom with Jamaican students. The manual is intended to be global and intercultural in order to avoid culture clashes but our teaching practice in a different cultural context demonstrates just the opposite result. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the quality of social and...

Abstract This article is intended to describe how a group of college students interpret political cartoons. For this purpose, the text is divided into two parts: the first is the interpretation of a sample model of Presidential Palacito (PP), Vladdo feature cartoon, published in Semana magazine every Sunday. To do this we have relied on the theory of illocutionary act of Austin, which refers to the communicative intent of a speaker, and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), which posits all scenarios of power overlap after socially constructed discourse. Then, we proposed a group of university students enrolled in the BA in...

  12. ‘Tema’ como punto de partida: Implicaciones pedagógicas

    Montemayor-Borsinger, Ana

ABSTRACT: As we know, reading and writing are not simply techniques we use to reproduce statements, but are real strategies that are essential for cultivating the world in which we are immersed. In this communication we analyze the Personal Critical Commentary Text, as an important tool for college students in order to use the language with intelligence and develop the natural human interest in the community. The purpose of this study is to make a reflection helping us to establish that through an adequate Textual Critical Commentary Text pedagogy, we will obtain an increase of the reading and writing competence...

Abstract Communicative reading aloud implies the use of prosodic features that allow the reader to organize the oral text to facilitate its interpretation by the audience. At the School of Languages, National University of Córdoba, Argentina, the teaching of reading aloud is a central topic of the subject Phonetics and Phonology II in the EFL courses. In spite of the specific training on reading aloud, an important number of students still produce inefficient readings; the hypothesis is that readers do not employ in an appropriate way the basic prosodic features (prominence, tone, pitch level and pause) that allow an efficient...

For Williamson, knowing and believing are mental states, but believing truly and justifiedly-and-truly believing are non-mental states. This discriminatory approach is relevant to his epistemology: his main negative epistemological thesis (on the alleged impossibility of defining knowledge in accordance with a traditional scheme) and his main positive epistemological thesis (his own alternative definition of knowledge) depend on his metaphysical theory about the demarcation of the mental. I present here a problem for Williamson’s theory of the mental: it imposes implausible restrictions on possible uses of concepts and linguistic expressions. I will describe some options that Williamson would have at his...

  16. Utterance content, speaker’s intentions and linguistic liability

    Picazo Jaque, Claudia
According to contextualists, communication has to do with pragmatically adjusted content, not with conventional meaning. This pragmatic content is sometimes identified with speaker meaning or with the thought the speaker intends to express. I will argue that given the sociolinguistic role of utterance content—the fact it provides reasons for action, liabilities and entitlements—locutionary content should not be modelled as a variety of speaker meaning.

  18. Dos caminos del mestizaje lingüístico

    Gómez Rendón, Jorge
The chapu shimi and the jopará are two mixed verieties. These are a product of a centennial contact of Spanish and an indigenous language, the Ecuadorian kichwa and the Paraguayan guaraní. The two mixed varieties, however, exhibit diametrically opposed configurations, where lexical and structural borrowing are common to the first variety, while code alternations are a trait of the second. This leads to the classification of the chapu shimi within the group of bilingual mixed languages, and the jopará as a relatively unstable mixed sociolect of a wide variation.

  19. Aproximación al nacionalismo extremeño: bases ideológicas y manifestaciones

    Ortiz Barquero, Pablo
After the end of the Francoist dictatorship, in the midst of the process of building the State of Autonomies, a nationalist current emerged in Extremadura. This nationalism was founded on class, wholly of the left, and its ideological bases ranged from social democracy to revolutionary Marxist proposals. The nationalist movement in Extremadura wanted self-governance based on their own identity (certain cultural, socio-economic, historical and linguistic characteristics), emphasising their underdevelopment and the plundering suffered by the region. However, this political current died out towards the ends of the 1980s, unable to articulate a solid plan and prove the worth of their...

  20. The Line and the Limit of Britishness: : he Construction of Gibraltarian Identity in M. G. Sanchez’s Writing

    Manzanas Calvo, Ana María
From Anthony Burgess’s musings during the Second World War to recent scholarly assessments, Gibraltar has been considered a no man’s literary land. However, the Rock has produced a steady body of literature written in English throughout the second half of the twentieth century and into the present. Apparently situated in the midst of two identita ry deficits, Gibraltarian literature occupies a narrative space that is neither British nor Spanish but something else. M. G. Sanchez’s novels and memoir situate themselves in this liminal space of multiple cultural traditions and linguistic contami -nation. The writer anatomizes this space crossed and partitioned by multiple...
