We introduce in this paper a framework and guidelines for learning through collaborative design on the ever-popular Web environment. We first summarize important factors mentioned in previous constructivist theories and pedagogies and propose four goals for learning: Active, Simulative, Interactive/Inter-creative, and Accumulative, called the ASIA principles together. According to these goals, we developed an environment for collaboratively learning through design on the Internet. We describe the functionality of this environment, including a Vee-heuristic-based design interface, a team-forming algorithm based on thinking styles, an online project management tool, and discussion channels. We then describe an exemplar learning activity with natural evolution...

    Mark J. Garrison; Hank Bromley
This article contributes to the growing body of research exploring the impor-tance of the social context in shaping the use of educational technologies. It presents the results of a 3 -year instrumental case study examining the power of the social context to shape, in negative ways, the use of technology in one urban elementary school. Three unsuccessful dynamics are identified that serve to block effective instructional uses of computers and these behaviors are related to what Linda McNeil described as “defensive teaching. ” These unsuc-cessful interactions, it is argued, represent actors ’ efforts to resolve the dilemma of how to...

  4. Innovative teaching/learning with geotechnologies in secondary education

    Eric Sanchez; Recherche Pédagogique
Abstract: The development of the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for professional purposes and the success of virtual globes (VG) for personal uses leads to addressing the question of the integration of geotechnologies into secondary education. In this paper, we examine the changes in geography education linked to the increasing use of geotechnologies by the general public. The diversity of teacher practices can be linked to the powerful potential of these technologies for the access and the analysis of geographical and geological information. The characteristics of these tools suit pedagogies based on projects, problem-solving or collaborative work even if...

  5. 1 Mismatched: High Stakes Testing and Preparing Kids for Life

    Aimee Verdisco
There is a raging debate in countries across the globe about how best to raise education standards, and what a world-class education should include. At present, the debate is being won by those who insist that schools should focus on the basics – the three “Rs”, of reading, writing and arithmetic – as student proficiencies in these areas determine success in school and life. Testing is at the heart of this view: high scores indicate quality education. From a policy standpoint, serious consequences follow. Quality brings resources in terms of better qualified teachers and more technology; low performance runs the...

  9. WORKSHOP ON SOCIO-CONSTRUCTIVIST SCENARIOS WITH THE INTERNET FOR SECONDARY AND HIGHER EDUCATION

While one can observe a boom of interest for e-learning in the last 2-3 years, current elearning systems rather focus on content delivery, as opposed to supporting students to solve more complex and open-ended tasks. We are convinced of the effectiveness of socioconstructivist pedagogies in education and struck by the apparent lack of widely deployed supporting tools. This workshop aims to orchestrate a fructuous exchange of ideas, research and practices on socio-constructivist education scenarios using Internet between participants. INTRODUCTION AND PROBLEM STATEMENT Currently, many variants of web-supported pedagogies exist, e.g. transmission of contents by teleconferencing or virtual libraries, web-based instruction,...
