- Francesconi, Rafael
This paper details how the hypothesis was reached for a research project regarding the study of
architectural composition. The answers to two questions are also addressed: what can be understood
by architectural composition, and how can architectural composition be learnt? The answers
to these research questions have been previously contemplated by three peripheral questions
regarding number, level of autonomy, and the necessity or eventuality of what is learnt from composition
architecture. Through answering these peripheral questions, how the hypothesis was reached
becomes clear, according to the concept of freedom of expression. Taken from an aesthetic
point of view, this is juxtaposed with the understanding of the study...

The building in which the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the
University of São Paulo is housed was designed by João Vilanova Artigas
and Carlos Cascaldi in 1961. It remains a paradigm of architecture unto
this day. This construction was conceived through the pedagogical ideas
upheld by Artigas. Its very foundation is the way in which politics as well as
social responsibility has influenced successive generations of architects.
The building speaks of an affinity with its contemporaries that are made up
of the Brutalist architectural movement. However, the special fluidity that
this building achieves makes it unique; unfortunately not always described
so by historians. In order to create...

La Escuela de Arquitectura de Chandigarh (1961-1965)
- O'Byrne, María Cecilia; Medina Duque, Santiago; Villegas Salazar, Martín
Le Corbusier always maintained an unruly attitude toward architectural
instruction: his very success came from the fact he was an autodidact. So
why, then, did he build a School of Architecture in Chandigarh? This paper
presents general facts about the project and about its relationship with
the College of Arts project located in the same city. The paper searches
for ways in which the project demonstrates itself as a very Lecorbuserian
method of architectural instruction, through a model that based on the
Modulor creates a building designed for unlimited horizontal expansion,
or mat-building.

Is the design of "flexible academic place" a comprehensive solution that aims
to answer the needs of the users, or, does it have the opposite effect and demand
that its users adapt in order for it to function efficiently? The previous
question is framed from the point of view of flexibility as a design tool, which
allows the dynamic nature of the contemporary learning process to be explored
for adaptable spatial models. It is assumed however, that the concept of flexibility
in academic place differs during the design phase and its consequent
usage. Using this as the essential premise of the paper, BK City, a building
that was...

The purpose of this paper is to examine the following question: could
the study of existing buildings contribute to the history of architectures
teaching practices? In order to answer this question, the concept of the
notion of a teaching practice is explained, and the fundamental elements of
a topographical approximation are considered. This disciplines objects of
study are works understood as objects/ events, or incidents in constructed
space. The paper then goes on to describe what was achieved during the
degree in Architectures History workshops at Universidad de los Andes.
In this environment the causes and implications of the previous statement
became evident.

- Llanos Chaparro, Isabel; Henao Carvajal, Edison
This paper details the undertaking of the undergraduate final year
project (2009 2010) of several students enrolled on the Specialisation in
Architectural Projects, part of the Architecture degree programme at the
Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Manizales). The purpose of this papers
authors documenting the experience was to put to the test a method of
teaching/ learning for the final year project workshop. This is based on a
teaching theory that revolves around resolving problems of form through the
recognition and understanding of universal solutions that exist in the works
of the architectural greats. In juxtaposition with the idea of contemporary
architectural methodology, which is based on the execution...

This paper sets out to examine the new architectural narrative that
has appeared over the past decade in the Central Chilean Valley by
way of the Universidad de Talca. Due to the many Chilean schools
of architecture this university has implemented a series of academic
initiatives that are far removed from traditional architectural instruction,
as well as producing a large number of small-scale architectural works.
The project is of great social and geo-cultural value, the purpose of
which is to enhance the memory and identity of the Chilean Central
Valleys population.

If a situation that aspires to improve city dwelling is contemplated, it is
necessary for there to be a close link between the reflection and action of
inter-disciplinary approaches in the city. Infrastructure as urban space and
a communication network is nowadays one of the important issues to be
addressed. The relationship between engineering and architecture from
the point of view of university teaching has not yet been explored sufficiently.
This paper details the fundamental reasons, the approaches, and the
past experiences that are being developed as part of theoretical/ practical
subjects at the School of Civil Engineering of the Polytechnic University of
Catalonia in Barcelona. This...

Aprender de la educación en arquitectura
- Teymur, Necdet
The author puts forward a series of fundamental questions about (the lack
of) research on architectural education. After an introduction, the author
breaks down three main questions: Why to study architectural education?
How to study architectural education? And, finally: What to study in architectural
education? The text includes comments on fallacies, opportunities
and risks of architectural education and research in the field. It concludes
that generating knowledge about architecture and architectural education
is paramount in the process of constructing architecture as a discipline.
Moreover, it is argued that anyone who performs research on architectural
education will subsequently develop a better understanding of both architecture
and the world.
