121. Social science perspectives on the - Amltal Etzlonl
WHERE DO WE go from here and how? Granted that we are amidst a true crisis of legitimation and meaning, and not just going through the growing pains of a segment of our youth, what comes after upheaval? Will America decline and fall, as the Roman empire did supposedly after it lost its moral fiber? Is the United States of America ready to be retired, a nation whose sun ha5 set, like the British, Dutch and Belgians after their empires collapsed? Will the country fall apart as the Austro-Hungarian state did following internal uprising and a defeat in war? Or...

122. Patagonian Ethnogenesis: towards a computational simulation approach - J. A. Barceló; J. A. Cuesta; F. Del Castillo; J. M. Galán; L. Mameli; F. Miguel; J. I. Santos; X. Vilà; Facultad De Sociología
Abstract. The basis of this research project is the computer simulation of the emergence of ethnicity and cultural differentiation in prehistoric hunter-gatherer groups. Instead of working directly on a universal theoretical model, we have preferred a predictive simulation of a historical case (ancient Patagonia) where the knowledge about the simulated social system is available at the necessary level of detail, using data from archaeological, ethnological, and historical research. The aim of this research is to test existing social theories of social evolution through history by creating a simple computer model of a society in a theoretically possible historical context, in...

Long-term unemployment affects the Spanish labour market to a broader extent than those of other European Union members. Moreover, the long-term unemployed present peculiar characteristics in terms of such variables as sex and age. This situation is related to the changing opportunities and conditions for participating in the labour market. This paper aims at analysing the principles on which the provision of both active and passive policies is based, i.e., how targets and incentives are formulated in Spain and to what extent labour market policies have been designed to protect the long-term unemployed. Rodolfo Gutiérrez is Doctor in Sociology by...

129. Philosophy and Development On the Problematic of African Development: A Diachronic Analysis - Lansana Keita
The idea of development is generally seen as central to any discussion of the economic, cultural, and political sociologies of the world’s nations. Nations of the West are seen as ‘developed ’ and members of the ‘First World’, while those of Africa, Latin America and some of those of Asia are seen as ‘developing ’ and belonging to the ‘Third World’. I propose to examine the meaning and application of the term ‘development ’ with respect to Africa, then discuss whether Africa was ever developed—recognizing that the term is temporally relative. I will also discuss the idea of what Africa...

131. Abstract/Résumé/Resumen A Challenge for Political Sociology: The Rise of Far-Right Parties in Contemporary Western Europe
The increased success of far-right parties in contemporary Western Europe presents a dual challenge for political sociology. Empirically, it confounds the freezing hypothesis of Lipset and Rokkan as well as the postmaterialist theories of Ignazi, Inglehart and Minkenberg. Theoretically, it points to the limitations of an overconcentration on voter alignments in political sociology. A comparative study of far-right parties in Western Europe (especially France, Italy and Great Britain) demonstrates the separate importance of leadership, competition within political niches and the partisan segmentation of society. The sociology of political parties need not abandon the study of voter alignments, but it should...
